Upwork takes a slice of 10% from this, leaving the freelancer with $450. However, that's not where the cake-cutting ends. Upwork adds an additional 5% processing fee on top of my payment as a buyer. That means on a $500 project, I'm not just paying $500; I'm paying about $525.

Let's say I decide to buy a gig for $500; a processing fee of $2 is added. For gigs costing more than $40, there's a 5% fee on top. For the freelancer, they don't walk away with the full amount either. A commission of 20% goes to Fiverr, meaning if they sold a gig for $500, they only pocket $400.

But let's not forget about Upwork's Connects, their digital currency system that freelancers use to bid on jobs. Each Connect costs $0.15. Considering that most job proposals require 1 to 6 Connects, costs can quickly add up for freelancers, especially those just starting out. This adds an extra layer of expense that freelancers need to consider, potentially making Upwork more expensive to use.

By contrast, Fiverr charges a flat 20% commission, which on the surface may seem steeper, but without the need for a bidding system, it's less complicated and arguably more transparent.

So, how does this all add up from the perspective of a buyer? Upwork's processing fee for clients stands at 5% for payments made through direct contract and 5% for both fixed prices and hourly rates. Fiverr charges a processing fee of 5.5% on the total amount. If the amount is less than $75, a $2,5 small order fee is also applied.

From my experience, when it comes to cost, Fiverr usually ends up being cheaper for the buyer, mainly due to its fixed pricing structure and lower minimum price.

From a selling perspective, if you're a newbie freelancer and want to start selling immediately without much hassle, Fiverr can be your go-to platform. As a workaround, their social media channels can prove to be a more effective method of resolving intricate issues.

There is no live chat feature, chatbot, or otherwise, and their support number is not easy to find. Many freelancers have expressed frustration with Fiverr's tendency to side with clients during disputes.

With over 10,000 skills available across 90+ categories, the typical sellers here are experienced freelancers, who come with a certain level of expertise and are willing to delve deep into comprehensive projects.

When it comes to Fiverr, it is like a bustling marketplace. Clients, typically smaller business owners or individuals, come here seeking a quick fix for their problems, like needing an 800-word blog post or a logo design. In this marketplace, you'll find freelancers of all kinds - from novices exploring the world of self-employment to veterans providing highly skilled services. Unlike Upwork, Fiverr does not implement a stringent application process for accepting freelancers, making it more accessible for those looking to start their freelancing journey. However, there's also the elite Fiverr Pro, where freelancers are vetted professionals verified for quality and service.

An analysis of the average budgets of clients on both platforms unveils an interesting contrast. Upwork clients arrive with an average budget of $5,045, while Fiverr clients operate with an average budget of $262. This implies that sellers on Upwork might find themselves juggling fewer but larger projects, while Fiverr sellers might have their hands full with multiple short-term gigs.

The overall ease of finding and hiring freelancers leans towards Fiverr, especially if the clients have a clear idea of what they want. The buyer holds the reins and can quickly select services as per their need. However, if a client is looking for more dialogue and a thorough understanding of the work needed, they would find themselves more at home in the interactive environment of Upwork.

While both platforms have their allure, what truly matters is the quality of work. Upwork, with its rigorous process for accepting freelancers, assures clients of a certain standard of expertise and experience. Fiverr, while being more open and accessible, offers its Fiverr Pro services for clients seeking a  premium experience. This high standard, however, comes at a steeper price point.

I've found myself appreciating this feature when juggling potential freelancers for a project and needing to keep track of my options.

Fiverr, in contrast, provides options to choose from Pro services, Local sellers, or Online sellers. This feature is particularly helpful when you're looking for a local creative professional or if you need a swift delivery.

How To Make Money on Upwork and Fiverr

For me, it has always been easier to make money on Upwork. There is a sheer diversity of jobs available on the platform. From SEO to PR, from video marketing to digital presence, you can dive into a whole world of possibilities. But every rose has its thorns. Upwork uses a virtual currency called Connects that freelancers must use - and pay for - to apply for projects. And you know what they say about money: it's easier to spend than to make. So yes, you'll have to spend some to make some.

Fiverr is not a place where I would go to sell my services anymore but that doesn't mean it's not right for you. It's known for its bustling marketplace filled with creative talent. Need a catchy jingle? You'll find it on Fiverr. A whimsical illustration for a blog post? Fiverr's got you covered. However, it's easier to get lost in the crowd. With a multitude of sellers offering the same services, standing out can feel like trying to scream in space, and for me, that's the main reason why I choose Upwork (well, and the quality of services offered, of course).

But even though I've made a lot more money on Upwork, that's not to say you can't make a fortune on Fiverr. Just look at Alexandra Fasulo, who made over $1 million on Fiverr as a freelance writer. So, what's the secret here?

The truth, my friend, is that it all comes down to the skill set you're offering and the way you market it. Fiverr's gig-based model makes it easy to set up shop and wait for clients to hire you.  Upwork's project-based model allows you to sift through and apply to the projects that pique your interest.

So, the question remains: Upwork or Fiverr? The answer, dear reader, lies in your hands. As I've said already, you need to consider the nature of your skills and services. If you're offering long-term, project-based work, Upwork might be your best bet. If, however, you're offering quick tasks and services, Fiverr might be your go-to platform.
