My Name is Bruce (Blu-ray version)
8/10
Can't really spoil too much on this one, since the trailer lays it all out. Chinese God/saint (saint of bean curd?) is awoken in a small town. Huge Bruce Campbell fan kidnaps Bruce to help. Bruce thinks it is a joke. Finds out it is not and runs away. Grows a pair and comes back to defeat the Bean Curd Lord. What, you'd think he'd lose?
This movie really isn't about the plot. It's about the dialogue and the (parody of) Bruce himself. I've met the guy, so I can tell you he really is not the jerk he acts like in the movie, but it is fun to watch him play it that way. Ted Raimi is good in all his roles, and we even get a cameo of Ellen Sandweiss of original "Evil Dead" (in)fame(y). The kid had his geek grove going, and the mom was a bunch of fun. Oh, and the dog. Good pooch on the hooch!
A lot of people did not like this film. I'm guessing because they were expecting something along the lines of "Army of Darkness", and got mostly a character piece. I personally like how Bruce plays the character 'Bruce'. If you are looking for a scary movie or an action movie, this will not do it for you. If you are a Bruce/Raimi/Evil Dead fan, you will get a ton of the in-jokes. I'm not sure, but is that "The Classic" (Sam Raimi's legendary car) that shows up later in the film? I was just lamenting the lack of "The Classic", when Vampire Wife says "there it is!"; I'm not sure. The lighting was too dark to make a definitive decision.
Even for fans this movie may disappoint. It has decent pacing and a bunch of topical jokes. The dance scene was great, way over the top. Then again, you have never seen me dance. Great rental for some chuckles, but I'm not sure about a buy Unfortuneatly, I did not get to watch the extras (the mailman was just down the road and I wanted to get some more Netflix for the weekend- only a few more days for pitchers and catchers, 6 months for football... breathe, breathe). I say give it a whirl, sugar!
