LE DUE COLONNE ROSSE

Diversi sono i racconti curiosi sulle due colonne di marmo rosso di Verona, erette sotto il doge Ziani, verso la fine del duecento. Le due colonne spiccano nella facciata di Palazzo Ducale, sul lato est verso la Piazzetta.In alcuni testi viene indicato questo luogo come il punto in cui il doge assisteva alle esecuzioni. In altri, che tra queste due colonne avvenissero le esecuzioni capitali. Anche l’architetto veneziano Filippo Calendario, che diede la forma attuale al Palazzo Ducale, (iniziata a partire dal 1341), a causa della sua adesione alla congiura contro la Serenissima attuata dal doge innominabile Marin Falier, venne condannato nel 1354 alla pena capitale ed impiccato tra le due colonne rosse.Le cronache dell’epoca riportano che il 5 Marzo del 1412, un certo Francesco Baldovino venne impiccato tra le due colonne perché ritenuto colpevole di aver tramato contro la Repubblica di Venezia. Nel 1470 Bartolammeo Memmo venne punito con la morte per aver cospirato contro il doge Cristoforo Moro. Il 23 Novembre del 1463 anche un certo Girolamo Valaressa venne impiccato in questo luogo.

There are several curious stories about the two columns of red Verona marble , erected under the Doge Ziani , towards the end of the thirteenth century . The two columns stand out in front of the Palazzo Ducale, on the east side towards the Piazzetta .In some texts, this place is referred to as the point at which the doge witnessed the executions . In others, that between these two columns should occur executions . Even the Venetian architect Filippo Calendario , who gave his present form at the Palazzo Ducale (started from 1341 ) , because of his membership in the conspiracy against the Serenissima implemented by the Doge Marin Falier unmentionable , was sentenced to death in 1354 and hung between the two red columns .The chronicles of 5 March 1412 , a certain Francis Baldwin was hanged between the two columns because found guilty of plotting against the Republic of Venice. In 1470 Bartolammeo Memmo was punished with death for conspiring against the Doge Cristoforo Moro . On November 23 of 1463 also a certain Girolamo Valaressa was hanged in this place.
