Spin, a fundamental but elusive electron attribute, promises to open up remarkable possibilities for a new type of electronics, called spintronics. In principle, manipulating spin is faster and more efficient than pushing charge around and can take place at smaller scales. Chips built out of spin transistors would be faster and more powerful than traditional ones and, farther down the road, may even be able to change their functions on the fly.
