Researchers at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, have separately come up with designs for pressure-sensitive artificial skin that will give artificial limbs the sense of touch. The Berkeley design uses an array of germanium-silicon nanowire transistors printed onto a polymer sheet. They respond to changes in the conductivity of a separate pressure-sensitive rubber layer. Both schools' designs offer sensitivity on a par with human skin.
