Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, in Germany, say they have set a record for
optical communications by getting a single laser to transmit data at a rate of 26 terabits per second--
or enough to download 700 DVDs in the blink of an eye. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing
protocol they used is capable of combining 4 bits of data onto a single wave.
