IBM researchers recently announced the creation of an optical bus that they say will narrow the so-called bandwidth gap, or the difference between intrachip and chip-to-external-component data transfer rates. The result, they say, will be computers 100 times as fast as anything now possible. The mind-boggling number-crunching capabilities of today's supercomputers will seem like a slow drip in comparison.
