The font is in the shape of an ark (a ship). The ark has long been used as a symbol of the Church, referring back to the ark of Noah, which brought him and his household to safety through the waters of the flood (cf. Genesis 7:1). Through the waters of Baptism, we are brought through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which allows us to participate in the new life Jesus won for us. We are, like Noah of old, saved through the waters. Noah was saved from the flood; through Baptism we are saved from sin and death as St. Paul writes, "We who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. We were indeed buried with him through baptism into his death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life" (Romans 6:3-4).
The water in our font is moving water. The life of faith is not a stagnant life. Baptism, of its very nature, means that we are living members of the Church; we not only participate in the weekly celebration of the Eucharist, foster a private prayer life, and continue to learn more about our faith - we have to also reach out and be of service to others, sharing our faith in Christ with the world. This moving water invites us to dip our right hand into it as we enter Church and make the Sign of the Cross. This gesture is a reminder that through Baptism we have entered into the life of the Holy Trinity, and that we have to fulfill our Baptismal responsibilities.
