To develop leadership skills and enhance Troop 504’s program, the boys requesting positions of responsibility attend the Greater Cleveland Council’s National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). The Troop reimburses half of the participation fee. Scouts meeting the requirements for the program and who are considering a leadership position within the troop should sign up for the course now.
Below is information on the NYLT provided by Don Young, the Scoutmaster in charge of the NYLT program including information on requirements, how to enroll and Council scholarships.
The Greater Cleveland Council will be offering two NYLT course weeks again in 2013. Each course week is designed to accommodate 48 youth participants, who are broken down into eight (8) 6-person patrols. Since the course is seven days long, it allows each of the patrol members to be the leader of their group for a day. The patrol leaders will attend PLC meetings, run their patrol meeting, and lead their patrol at our daily troop meeting in addition to attending presentation on numerous leadership skills.
Much as we now expect every unit to have trained adult leaders, I think the youth in these units should expect their YOUTH LEADERS to be trained as well. There is no better place for that training than NYLT! This course is a great investment in the leadership, both current and future, of your unit and will provide the participants with skills they can use not only in Scouting, but in life.
Many of you have been long time supporters of National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), while some have never sent kids to the course and may not even know what it is. So that you have a better understanding of the benefits to units in sending youth to NYLT, we have a section on the course website just for you. Just click on the 'Scoutmaster Info' tab at nyltgcc.org and learn more about what participants will learn on the course. We also have an 'NYLT Overview for Scoutmaster' document under the 'Course Forms' tab or you can send me an e-mail at nyltgcc.scoutmaster@gmail.com and I would be happy to answer any questions.
We are accepting registrations for both Course Week #1 (Sunday, June 9 to Saturday, June 15) and Course Week #2 (Sunday, June 16 to Saturday, June 22). At the current time, we still have slots available in both course weeks, but registrations are starting to pick up. So while there are slots available at this moment, and the course is still a little less than three months away, units that wait too long may be left asking what the course dates for 2014 will be.
As of today, we have youth from 18 different units in Course Week #1 and 14 different units in Course week #2 and both course weeks include youth from multiple councils. This makes NYLT a great place for your youth leaders to learn more about what other units are doing and come up with new ideas that they can take back to your unit. Not to mention the leadership skills they will bring back from the course.
ALL payments and scholarship forms should sent to the Greater Cleveland Council (Attn: Chris Friswold) , 2241 Woodland Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115. It will allow them to keep track of how much each person has paid and who has asked for the Wood Badge / NYLT Scholarship Fund for financial assistance. Scholarships are available to assist youth that might need some assistance to attend the course. You can download the form from the NYLT course website (nyltgcc.org).
In order to attend, a youth DOES NOT have to currently hold a unit leadership position. He must demonstrate the 'potential' to be a future leader in your unit. Here are the guidelines for participants:
Boy Scouts
Be 13 years of age or have completed the seventh grade.
Be a First Class Scout (by the beginning of the course).
Completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops
Have his Scoutmaster's recommendation.
