FEDERAL AID:

Americorps: Service in Americorps can result in additional Federal aid for education. and loan forgiveness.

Pell Grants (FAFSA) Need-based grants up to $6,095. Funds may be used for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation. If you live off campus, you will be issued a check to pay for these expenses if funds remain after tuition has been paid.

TEACH Grants Up to $4,000 a year for those going into certain teaching careers

Federal Loans See also Federal Student Loan Basics

Stafford Unsubsidized: Available to all students regardless of financial need. Interest payments must be made from the time the loan is made.

Stafford Subsidized: Available only to students who qualify based on need; the government pays the interest until you complete your education.

Perkins: Available only to students with extreme need. Similar to Stafford Subsidized loans, but the interest rate is lower.

STATE AID:

Chafee Education and Training Grant up to $5,000 for current and former foster children

Oregon Barber and Hairdresser Grant Program for students studying barbering, hair design, cosmetology, and manicure

Oregon Department of Human Services grant for foster children. Free tuition at Oregon public universities and community colleges for children who were in foster care or tribal custody at age 16 or older, or who were in DHS/Tribal custody for at least 6 months after age 14. Apply through OSAC.

OOG: Oregon Opportunity Grant Need-based grants for Oregon residents attending Oregon colleges. Up to $2,250 per year. Maximum EFC $3,500. May be used for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation.

Oregon Promise May be used for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation. Here's how it works (taken from the Mt. Hood CC website): If you are eligible for full Pell and Oregon Opportunity Grants (OOG) then you will receive $1,000 from Oregon Promise. If you are eligible for partial Pell/OOG then Oregon Promise will pay the difference. The maximum amount you can receive from Oregon Promise is $3,637. If you are not eligible for Pell/OOG then Oregon Promise will pay all or most of your tuition. To qualify you must have a high school GPA of at least 2.5, go to college within 6 months of high school graduation, and be a resident of Oregon for at least the past year. Oregon Promise does not cover books, fees, or room and board.

Oregon Student Child Care Grant: Helps students who have children to pay for child care so they may pursue higher education.

Worksource Oregon/Lane County: Grants of up to $4,500 available to students (age 18+) who are working in a job-training program (at community college, trade school, etc.) Generally for students who have a 1-year or less program or are in the last year of their program. First step: go to WorkSource Lane in Florence or Eugene to get registered. Best chance for funding is after summer (after June 30) and Fall. See link at bottom of page for more information.

Kaiser Permanente Health Care Career Scholarships MEDICAL for students wishing to become health care professionals. At least one scholarship will be given to a qualified student from SHS each year. Amounts vary from $2,000 to $10,000. Based on academic achievement, diversity characteristics, financial need, extracurricular activities, commitment to the health care field, and character. Registration closes December 6.

Kids' Chance of Oregon Scholarship DISABLED PARENT Available to students whose parent has suffered a work-related injury that has resulted in the death of inability to work of that parent. Open enrollment.

Lane County Farm Bureau Scholarships: FORESTRY/AGRICULTURE For students studying forestry or an agriculture-related field. Students should be able to demonstrate prior involvement in agricultural activities.

Marine Technology Society Scholarships MARINE SCIENCE for high school seniors accepted into full-time marine-related college programs.

Oregon NASA Space Grants: SCIENCE, TECH, ENGINEERING, MATH Must be attending one of the approved universities or community colleges in Oregon.
