SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES EDITION
The earlier you get started with your summer plans, the better are your chances of getting the best opportunities. APPLY NOW for any of the programs listed below that interest you.
Employment
· Summers in Florence provide great opportunities for employment. Many businesses will soon be hiring for the summer. Get an early start before the summer jobs have been filled. Prepare your resume and hand-deliver it to local businesses. Some suggestions:
Restaurants (waiting tables, bussing)
Motels (desk clerk, housekeeping)
Tourist attractions (Sea Lion Caves, golf courses, sand dune tours, etc.)
Gift shops (especially those in Old Town)
Safeway, Fred Meyer
Campgrounds (like Honeyman State Park)
· Park Ranger Assistant: Go online to the State of Oregon Jobs Page or go to https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/jobs/pages/jobs.aspx and scroll down the page until you reach the state park that interests you. The Jessie M. Honeyman State Park in Florence has a link.
· RISE Services hires high school students with cars to work with children and others who have disabilities. Email joshuas@riseservicesinc.org
· Worksource Lane is the state employment department. There is an office very close to school at 3180 Highway 101. Call 541-997-1913 or go online to: http://www.worksourceoregon.org/JobSeekers.html Employers use this organization to post job openings.
· Summer camps: Many camps around the state are looking for counselors. The pay is typically not high, but you will get room and board. Two local camps are the Girls Scout Camp and the Boy Scout Camp here in Florence. For the Girl Scouts Camp, call the Girl Scouts Portland office at 541-485-5911. Volunteering
Summer can be a great time to get involved in one or more of the many volunteer opportunities in the Florence area. You will be performing an important service to others, learning valuable skills, and strengthening your resume which will help with college and scholarship applications. The ASPIRE office has a list of many opportunities in the area. Stop by for a copy.
Learning
· Summer Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL) at the University of Oregon. Free one-week residential and day programs for students who qualify (low-income families or first-generation college students). Subjects to choose from for rising freshmen and sophomores include economics, world languages, product design, psychology, performing arts, environmental studies, chemistry, speech and persuasion, global cultures, and orchestra. For rising juniors and seniors: biology, business, education, English/journalism, geography, product design, physics, psychology, speech and persuasion, orchestra, architecture and environment. https://sail.uoregon.edu.

· The Oregon State University Cascades Campus offers summer programs in digital media, science and engineering, and creative writing. https://osucascades.edu/summer-academy/options
· KXCR, the Florence community radio station, is looking for students interested in getting involved in broadcasting. You could develop and broadcast your own radio show, or work with other students to create a music, commentary, news, or information show. See Bob in ASPIRE.
· Sea Scouts has a new program in Florence. You will learn about sailboats and powerboats: navigation and piloting, boating rules, cruising, maintenance, and more. Contact Dean Lund at 570-520-3068 or 541-991-6832.

· Lane Community College offers short-term classes through its continuing education program. Go online to https://lanecc.augusoft.net/ and click on the Florence link.
· Weekly classes at Florence Regional Arts Center (FRAA) in Florence: Classes each Saturday in oil painting (mornings) and acrylic pour art (afternoons). Classes are also scheduled periodically in creative writing, porcelain painting, ceramics, jewelry-making, and more. 541-997-4435
· Get involved in swimming, gymnastics, exercise classes and more at Coastal Fitness in Florence. 541-997-8086
· CROW offers several summer camps: Song and Dance (July 8 to 20); School of Wizardry (July 22 to August 2); and Advanced Acting (August 5 to 17). https://www.crowkids.com/summer-camp. 541-999-8641
· Siuslaw Watershed Camp June 15 to 29: explore the watershed, help with restoration projects, and have fun. Go to http://www.siuslaw.org/camps/
· Law Enforcement Career Camp for students from age 15 to 17. A six-day camp on Oregon State Police Academy grounds. August 3-9. www.orlegion.org/law-enforcement-career-camp. Apply on or before April 15. See Bob in ASPIRE.
· The Florence Police Department has a “ride-along” program that allows high school students to spend several hours with a police officer on duty in a patrol car. 541-997-3515
· Oak Hill School in Eugene has an extensive summer program of academic and non-academic activities. http://oakhillschool.com/summer-programs
· Rose Children’s Theater in Eugene. “Triple Threat Camp” is for grades 6-12, July 29 to August 2. Students will learn dance, acting, and vocal skills. rosechildrenstheatre.org458-215-0220.
· University of Oregon Sports Camps: Many sports offered to different age groups. www.camps.goducks.com.
· The Young Leaders Program at Willamette University in Eugene is a 7-day learning experience for students entering 9th through 12th grades. Topics include personal and professional leadership, civic involvement and governance, business and commerce, law enforcement and criminal justice, legal issues, and media/technology/journalism. · The National Outdoor Leadership School offers courses in backpacking, sea kayaking, mountaineering, sailing, hiking, and mountain climbing. Costs range from $1,800 to about $7,000 depending on the length and type of course; scholarships are available. 800-710-6657 or admissions@nols.edu.
