Back in 2009, Barry Read , a film-set designer who lives near the North Auckland line at Wayby, south of Wellsford , designed 'Cooltrainz' : A fully-electric, self-powered, double-carriage rail car - with the Wellsford to Auckland commuter-run on the North Auckland Line in mind.
He presented the concept witth the scale model to the Parliamentary Select Committee for the Inquiry into the Future of Passenger Rail in October 2022. ( see the video below )
Despite all the work he's put into this project his efforts to get expressions of interest in building the prototype have come to nothing and in 2026 Barry took down his web-site ; https://www.futurerailnz.com
