Course Registration

Every academic term has 2 registration periods. Phase I registration is generally 2 months before the start of the semester, and usually lasts about 4 weeks in length. Phase II registration is the week before the start of a semester and the first full week of classes during a semester. You may only add classes to your schedule during a live registration phase. Registration times are governed by time tickets.

How to Register:

  • Log into BuzzPort.
  • On the Home tab locate the "REGISTRATION
  • AND STUDENT SERVICES" channel
  • Select the "Registration - OSCAR" link
  • Select "Student Services & Financial Aid"
  • Select "Registration"
  • Select "Term"
  • Select "Add/Drop Classes"

Permit and Overload Requests

If you need a permit for another department, find the contact information/instructions here.

If you need an INTA permit, overload, or duplicate error override, please proceed as follows:

  1. Go to OSCAR (https://oscar.gatech.edu/)
  2. Click "Secured Access Login"
  3. Login with your gtID and Pin
  4. Choose "Student Services & Financial Aid"
  5. Choose "Registration"
  6. Choose "Registration Override Request"
  7. Choose "International Affairs"
  8. Click "Continue"
  9. Select "Permit Type" (Options include duplicate course, prerequisite override, restricted class permit, and time conflict.) You must choose the correct type of permit or you will not be able to register for the class!
  10. Type your "Reason"
  11. You will come to a screen with radio buttons. You will only be able to enter one class at a time. Choose the first class you need and then follow the steps again for the additional classes.

The system will generate an automatic email to let you know whether the permit has been granted. Until you receive the e-mail, you can go back on through OSCAR and select "Check Status of Override Request."

If you have requested and been granted a permit and/or overload you must still register for the class via OSCAR. Follow these steps:

  1. Login to OSCAR (https://oscar.gatech.edu)
  2. Click Student Services & Financial Aid
  3. Click Registration
  4. Click Registration Override Request Status -- if your request has been approved, make note of the CRN number and go back to the Registration screen
  5. Click ADD/DROP CLASSES
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page, enter the CRN number in the Add Classes Worksheet
  7. Click Submit Changes

The class has been added to your schedule. This is the way you must add classes once you have received a permit and/or overload.

Waitlisting

Waitlisting is a new function that academic departments may employ that allows students to add to a waitlist for a course that is closed. Once a student has waitlisted for a course section, he or she will receive notification via email if a seat becomes available in that section. Waitlisted students are notified on a “first-come-first-serve” basis, and once the notification is received, he or she will have a specified window of time to register for the course. The email notification will specify your window of time. During Phase I, students will have 24 hours to register for the course section after notification. During Phase II, students will have 12 hours to register for the course section after notification. Waitlisting is not registration or enrollment in the courses.

Departments that are currently using the waitlist function for one or more course sections:

  1. Biology
  2. Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering
  3. Chemistry
  4. Economics
  5. Mathematics

Instructions on registering using the waitlist function can be found at: http://registrar.gatech.edu/registration/waitlisting.php

Restricted Courses

INTA restricts certain major core classes and selected electives during Phase I. Students will be notified when the restrictions are lifted.

Nunn School students have priority registration for languages courses offered by the School of Modern Languages during Phase I registration. Register early for these classes before they are opened to the general GT student body.

Restricting classes to majors-only during Phase I is a common practice across campus, so please read the course information on OSCAR for restriction information in other departments. Find out who to contact in other departments at: http://registrar.gatech.edu/registration/oprequest.php.
