FAQ

I'm graduating this semester. What is the Online Application for Graduation that I need to fill out?

During the semester prior to the graduation semester, INTA, IAML, and EIA students must apply to graduate online though OSCAR/DegreeWorks, which notifies the registrar that the student is preparing to graduate. There are also Nunn School departmental requirements. For more information on the process, see Online Application for Graduation (OAG)/DegreePetitions.

Can I get academic credit for my internship?

Nunn School students can earn either academic or audit credit for internships! Full or part-time, paid or unpaid, credit is available! Audit credit (through the Career Center) is available for both paid or unpaid internships. Students participating in full or part-time paid/unpaid internships are eligible for up to 12 credits of audit credit, which appears on the transcript.

Students may choose to earn academic credit for unpaid internships. Nunn School students participating in full or part-time unpaid internships may earn up to 3 credits for their internship experience. This will count as INTA elective or Free elective credit toward the degree requirements. Learn more at Credit for Internships.

What certificates are offered by INTA?

The Nunn School offers certificates in Asian Affairs, European Affairs, Latin American Affairs, International Affairs and Scenarios, Models and Military Games.  INTA/IAML/EIA majors are ineligible for the International Affairs certificate. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of a predetermined, 12-hour cluster of courses approved by the INTA Advisor or a specific INTA faculty member. Students may apply for a Certificate by submitting the application, listing the courses taken and grades earned toward satisfying the certificate requirements. The application is due the last day of classes of the term you graduate and certificates will be awarded upon graduation and mailed to students. Find out more on the INTA website.

How about a minor in International Affairs?

Only non-INTA/IAML/EIA majors are eligible for an INTA Minor. INTA/IAML/EIA majors that wish to pursue a particular concentration should consider a Certificate. The INTA minor requires 18 hours of academic credit. If you declare the minor, you get access to our Thursday Jobs and other relevant scholarship, fellowship and award opportunities. While you are not required to declare the minor, you are required to submit the Approved Program of Study Form with your OAG. Rules and regs governing the INTA Minor can be found on the Canvas site.

What is a Cluster?

A non-major cluster is a grouping of classes that are related or thematic, like Pre-law, Management, HTS, or Pre-Health sciences.  The purpose of the cluster is to give students a secondary specialization and provide additional depth to the undergraduate program.  Students are encouraged to use cluster classes towards minors or certificates in other subject areas.  INTA majors must complete a 15-credit non-major cluster, and EIA majors must complete a 9-credit non-major cluster, but for IAML students, the cluster is optional because IAML majors already graduate with significant specialization in International Affairs AND Modern Language. Clusters must be approved by the INTA advisor. Find out more on Canvas.

What are Independent Study Courses?

Sometimes referred to as a directed study, or special problems, the independent study course allows Nunn School students to work independently with a faculty member on a research topic of the student's choosing.  Credit for this can vary between one and 3 hours, and is taken on a letter-grade basis. The credit will count toward an INTA or Free elective.

Students interested in an independent study course should meet with a faculty member he or she is interested in working with to talk about research options, decide on a topic, and complete the Special Problems Application for undergraduate students or graduate students. Faculty member research interests can be found on the Faculty page for the INTA website.  Read more to find directions for completing the paperwork and registering for the course.

How do I pick a major?

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs encourages students to explore all the majors at the Institute to make sure they feel comfortable with their chosen majors.  There are ways students can explore other majors at Georgia Tech, including:

After you have investigated other majors, you can follow the steps listed on the advising blog, or the Registrar's website, should you decide to change your major.

How do I change my Major?

If you wish to change out of one of our majors, meet with and obtain the signature of the new department/school first, and then follow the DocuSign process to have your form signed by the Nunn School Advisor.

If you wish to change into the IAML or INTA major, we do not allow Change of Majors during Registration, so please plan accordingly! Learn more about our Change of Major policies and process.
