There is a charming Mrs Rubidge, wife of a lieutenant in the Navy, who lives within six miles of us, but there is a swamp two miles broad between, across which there is no road, and by water it is eighteen miles to go to call upon her. I regret we have never yet met Colonel Talbot ; I understand he is going to live in England again .
p43
The first year in the 'bush' (a name given to the woods in general by settlers) has passed away with only a very rough beginning of the house and that not nearly finished. There are a few families scattered in the neighbouring townships of Smith Monaghan and Otonabee ; with the exception of Lieut. Rubidge and a few miners from England all are farmers The Scotch farmers are a great help and comfort to us ; one of our young men, Donald McIntyre, is so considerate ; often when his day's work is done he comes in and grinds the wheat into flour for the next day's bread. Feeding these workmen makes a great inroad in our stock of provisions. If we had a boat it would be easier to manage as there is a grist mill across the river.
p52
"Mr Stewart had occasion lately to visit Cobourg and his lameness made the trip a great under taking never to be forgotten. He started on this tedious journey, going through Otonabee packed up in a rough ox sleigh box with a man driving. Saturday morning they went nine miles, that night slept at the kind Highlander's, husband to my 'femme sage' whom Donald brought to me ; this was within two miles of Mr Rubidge's. Sunday Mr Stewart went there and spent the day and night. He liked Mr and Mrs Rubidge very much." (Their information and great hospitality began a friendship which lasted through out their lives.)
p89
After a little time up drove Mr and Mrs Rubidge. We all laughed and talked for n hour, when the gentlemen agreed to let us have quiet possession of the parlour to adorn ourselves. They went to the Doctor's medicine shop, and we ladies spent one good hour in dressing our beautiful persons. I had but little show in the business as I had only my head to dress. Mrs Rubidge and Mrs Reade went without caps. Mrs Reade had a large wreath of artificial flowers in her hair and wore a brilliant geranium coloured tabinet which did not suit her. Mrs Rubidge had on a white striped gauze trimmed with pink satin. When we set out T and Mrs Reade Dr Reade and Mrs Rubidge, Mr Rubidge and myself all walked and in the same routine entered the drawing room of the Government House which is nearly opposite to Dr Reade's. You must know that all these houses which sound so grand are merely log houses and little better than the cabins are at home. Dr Reade's house is a very small, miserable, inconvenient place, but only a temporary one. The Government House is the best I ever saw for a log house, the parlour and drawing room good sized, well proportioned, and really pretty rooms.

Hi Jeff,
I now do wikitree and was trying to connect up unconnected Rubidges.
I came across a descendent of
John Samuel Rubidge (Main list branch 10) coachmaker b.c. 1782, b. Herfordshire in 1851 census)
He is also in the 1841 census, coach maker, age 58 b Middlesex. So the born Herfordshire is likely an error. 1841 familysearch link (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQJ6-ZYW)
I also came across a descendent of
James Rubidge (unlinked Rubidges, branch 12) b. [c. 1788] or [1784], d. [24 Aug 1846] or [1841]? hanged himself? Coachmaker. John Samuel and James had a business 74 Tooley St. London 1823 "Rubidge Bros. Coachmakers". [poss. James bur 30 Aug 1846 Age 58 St Marylebone, 13 Princes St Listson Grove St]
He is also in the 1841 census, age 50 (50-54 with rounding used in that census) b Middlesex. Familysearch link (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQJ2-5JG)
As I looked more closely at James I don’t think he belongs where he is listed as the son of James Rubidge and Charlotte. His ‘father' James died in Eastcheap, London. His ‘siblings' who have baptism records were all baptized in Eastcheap, London.
Since John Samuel and James are partnered in "Rubidge Bros. Coachmakers"
It seems likely that they are brothers, and not 2 perhaps more distantly related Rubidges.
I have linked them that way on wikitree, their father’s profile at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rubidge-48
Thank you for all you have done. When finding a stray Rubidge, the first thing I do is look on your pages.

This has a link to Rubidge Family Bibles. This is a wikitree free space page where you will find a transcription of my gg-gfather Alfred Rugidge and my g-gfather David Rubidge’s bible records. At some point I found images of our common ancestor Robert Rubidge’s bible on line (the link is now restricted) and added a transcription of those entries. Robert’s bible went with his 2nd wife Eleanor to Canada and ended up in the household of her son Frederick, where additional entries were made in various handwriting and added newspaper clippings.
