These are my notes from various sources.
George Percival (m. Maude, don't think they had children) and Mary Violet (known as Aunt Daisy, secretary, single) went to Chicago, lived in Chicago, came to Canada to visit in 1929, sick at time, died in Chicago
Fanny Shaw as widow of Fred William remarried - Jack [John] Harper, had one son Robert Nathaniel Harper (Family Bible)
Rubidge, Henry Alfred, railway service, was b. at Peterborough, Ont., Mch 12,1850. Ed. there, he entered the service of the Chicago and Eastern Ry. as a clk. 1875. Promoted chief clk. and genl. bookkeeper, 1877, he was further advanced, 1882, by appt. to the office of auditor and in 1885 to that of secy. of the road. These two positions he still retains. -- Chicago, Ill.
Thomas Rubidge, Age 37, Leather Dresser from Surrey on the ship Nancy to Maryland as an indentured servant from Port of London 12 to 19 Sept. 1774.
The genealogy of the Rubidge family was particularly well documented for the generations born between the 1700's and the late 1800's mainly in an attempt to prove legitimate claim to a fortune left in Chancery which was eventually secured by one Mengini-Jones, a female relative who married an Italian. These chronicles have been of consequential benefit in being able to produce names, places and dates which would otherwise have been lost forever!
...
Whence the Settlers: Charles and his elder brother Robert Henry ended careers in the Royal Navy as Lieutenants on half-pay and were subsequently granted Commander rank, no doubt in recognition of services rendered their respective Colonies of Canada and the Cape of Good Hope. The title was originally Master-Commander, a rank which stemmed from the practice of employing Mercantile Marine Masters to complement the Royal Navy's fleet & Corps of officers in times of war. (Ref: England's Sea Officers, M.A. Lewis, 1939)
...
Robert Henry: entered the RN 1798 Dec 10, aged 11 as AB on board Sloop Hermes, Capt. Gilmour. As Midshipman he sailed in Glatton, Capt Nathaniel Portlock to New South Wales via Cape of Good Hope in 1803. Joined Utrecht 64 then flagship of Read Admiral Patton in the Downs, and Eurydice 24. Made Sub-lieut into Sharpshooter, then promoted to Lieut, 1808 in the Stately 64, flagship of Rear Admiral Bertie in the Baltic. Appointed to brig Port Mahon to escort trade to Lisbon and in Aug 1812 to the sloop Rover Capt Erskine Loch, stationed Bay of Biscay and 1813 to the Sparrow 16 stationed off N. coast of Spain. On half-pay in 1814 and was granted commander rank in 1845. Source: "Commissioned Sea Officers of the Royal Navy 1660 to 1815". This is not his full record but ships & masters are given to show the influence of his various captains in the naming of his children. Is this tradition carried to Charles' side? Note: What relation was Capt Gilmour to his mother, Margaret Anne, I wonder?
Background: I have no record of 'original ethnic or tribal origins' but it is said that there is a strong Welsh connection with sheep farming interests in both Kent and also South Wales (Glamorgan and Carmarthen). My father used Welsh names such as 'Gletwyn' for his various properties, and there are branches of the family tree who use Welsh names. eg. Gwynne-Jones and Lloyd, but our branch does not maintain any strong Celtic tradition. The records I have show ancestral base at St. Mary, Newington, London and St Olave. (Norfolk or London?)
Charles went to Canada in 1819, as you no doubt have recorded.
Robert Henry emigrated with his family to the arid Karoo in 1820/21 where he established a sheep farm, said to be the first merino stud to be registered in the Colony. I learnt from my father that sheep, siblings and workers were exposed to a very harsh and tough lifestyle to ensure survival of only those who are strong and healthy!
Their brother JOSEPH WILLIAM, an artist, set out with Robert to the Cape but stayed on at St. Helena where their ship called to take on water. He was still on shore when the ship sailed. Joseph's claim to fame was the portrait and death mask of Napoleon which he executed with the approval of Madame Bertrand, wife of the Emperor's major domo. [Note: The portrait is well-known, however, the death mask attributed to JWR, also known as the Sankey mask, is not generally accepted as authentic. - JPR] On his return to England he issued over 1000 copies of the mask and pictures under subscription, at 7s.6d. each. The original portrait was presented to Napoleon II. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and Society of British artists and executed likenesses of numerous London dignitaries of the day. He died at age 25 and was buried at Walworth, Kent-Road, London.
...
The origins of the Rubidges in RSA are from the farm Wellwood. Apart from having reputedly the only orange and grapefruit trees in the Karoo, and being a famous sheep herd, it also has a paleontological museum which is a national monument and houses the fossilised remains of many extinct species which roamed the then verdant Karoo ... such as sabre tooth tigers, dinosaurs of various types and reptiles. The fossils were found on the farm & vicinity. The 'fossil-hunter' tradition is still maintained in that each generation produces one or more doctors of paleantology.
I suppose the Charles branch should be considered the Senior Family and are more co-hesive than the rest of us, probably through the influence of the ancestral farm. The other children and their families have spread far and wide in search of stability. Situated +/- 40 Km from Graaf Reinet, near a small village named Nieuw Bethesda in the district of Pearston, the farm has spawned many famous personalities and influential people. Perhaps Richard is the best source of further information on this.
My own branch of the family stems from Alfred Portlock who vacated the family farm Wellwood as inheritance devolved only upon the eldest son, the rest having to depend for a living on their own skills, eduction or the girls' ability to 'marry into the gentry'.
Robert Henry landed at Port Elizabeth and is shown in a list of settlers as one of those who sailed independently of organised paries. i.e. He was not one of the sponsored 1820 settler emigrants. (A sponsored settler had land entitlements of 400 acres, which had to be worked for the benefit of the Crown until all debts had been discharged. indendent settlers were not so burdened and in fact were able to take over poorly managed farms for their own account, thereby expanding through acquisition).
...
The Rubidge and Southey families 'walked' their flocks of sheep 300km inland to the place which eventual became their farm. The available transport were wagons, each drawn by a span of 16 oxen or mules, with the men walking or riding horses, armed with muzzle loaded rifles to protect their flock and of course to provide fresh meat from abundant game herds. They possibly had with them a number of Malay slaves whose descendants use the Rubidge name to this day. Their slaves were 'set free' in 1875 but most opted to stay on the farm, I am led to believe. Most have kept their Islamic traditions. Some of their descendants are wealthy businessmen and sportsmen, especially in cricket. A number now live in the UK. There were no 'black' tribemen in the desert areas in which they chose to rear their sheep. The Karoo is one of the healthiest sheep areas in the world, being free of most natural diseases, as the rainfall is low, at 300mm per year. ...
Eleanor Dixie: Married Southey, who was the son of Robert Henry's "trekking partner". I have no further information on her issue.
Charles: See Wellwood, above. I know very little of this branch other than that they are a well respected and influential family in RSA.
Richard Nathaniel: Bachelor: Medical doctor, explorer and botanist, geologist, etc. One of the finders of copper deposits in Namaqualand. Made a gold strike in the Cape Colony but was of limited extent and the vein petered out quickly. Worked with Dr Atherstone, renowned for identifying the first diamond to be discovered at Kimberley. Was a medical doctor at Port Elizabeth hospital, where a ward was named after him. Was said to have advised on the siting and construction of early roads through the treacherous mountain passes which divide the coastal plains from the hinterland. Some of these roads are still used to this day. Wrote numerous works which were published by the Royal Society and others.
Others: Irskine; Harriet Eliza, Herbert Jones: No records in my possession.
Alfred Portlock: My Great-grandfather: Farmer. I have no other records and my father never spoke of his own immediate family, including his own father. A big gap here, which I intend to fill when time permits.
Of Portlock's issue, I have only the references given on the attached family tree, with the following addition of note:
Angus Henry: Joined a trekker group of pioneers in the late 1800's to establish a new Colony in the name of the British South Africa Company which became Rhodesia and is now Zimbabwe. He, as had the others with him, 'purchased', for 50 pounds sterling (borrowed), title to land from a company agent associated with Cecil John Rhodes. After 7 months of extreme hardship they arrived to find there were no farms. He died of malaria at his destination. He was a good shot, and served as hunter and wagon driver. He kept pencilled records in a hard-bound exercise book in which he described daily events of the physical hardships and shows up the interaction of different people thrown together, notable actions, sacrifices, frailties and perfidy of human nature. Some pages were stained with his blood. The diary lay in a box for over 80 years in an attic of a distant relation of one of the surviving trekkers who returned to SA, and came to me by mere chance through the offices of an honest man, It is now in the Albany 1820 Settler museum in Grahamstown. Makes fascinating reading.

NOTES:
...
This coat of arms was used by Richard Nathaniel Rubidge, B.A., M.R.C.S.L., L.M.R.S., during 1850 to 1869 and may be regarded as belonging to the family although books by Fairburn, Debrett and others on Peerage, Companionage, etc. give only the crest and that over the name of "Rubridge". My sister Millicent could not however, find the name "Rubridge" in records at Somerset House whereas she did see letters written personally by Robert Henry and Charles RUBIDGE. The inference could be that the middle "r" crept in as a clerical error.

summary:
Joseph William Rubidge was on his way to South Africa when he stopped off at St Helena and was present when Napoleon died in 1821. Since he was the only painter on the island at the time, with the permission of the wife of one of Napoleon's staff, he painted the emperor in his death bed, and made a death mask. The painting was reproduced in England and sold many copies, making him prosperous. He lived in Walworth, London and had a studio in Old Kent Road. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1823 and 1824. Today, the death mask is owned by the French gov't (Sankey collection in Paris).

BIOGRAPHY / HISTORY
Otonabee Township, Peterborough County, is bounded on the north by Douro Township, on the south by Rice Lake and the Otonabee River, on the west by the Otonabee River, and on the east by by Asphodel Township. Otonabee was first surveyed in 1819 and, in the same year, was settled on by George Kent. Captain Charles Rubidge also visited Otonabee in 1819 and he returned with his family for permanent settlement in May 1820. Numerous other settlers also came to Otonabee in 1820 (approximately 23 men, some with families, some single). By 1825, 51 emigrant families, mainly from the south of Ireland, were added to the residents of Otonabee Township. These emigrants were some of the many emigrants led to Upper Canada by the Honourable Peter Robinson under the auspices of the British Government. In 1825, Dr. Gilchrist opened grist mill and during the winter of 1829-1830, a general store was opened, both in the town of Keene. After the opening of the mill, there was an influx of settlers into the Otonabee region. By the 1861 census, the total population of Otonabee township was 4221, made up of the following nationalities: Irish (759), English (289), Scotish (412), American (37), Upper Canada (2684), Lower Canada (30), and other countries (10).

BIOGRAPHY / HISTORY
The Department of Railways and Canals was created in 1879 by extracting from the Department of Public Works its Railway Branch and the operational responsibilities for canals administered by the Office of the Chief Engineer, and combinig them to form a new ministry composed of the two branches (the Railway Branch and the Canal Branch). The Railway Branch was responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of government-owned railways, and administered a program of financial assistance designed to encourage railway companies to construct new lines. The Canal Branch supervised the operation, maintenance, and enlargement of the Canadian Canal System and undertook the construction of new canals when required. In 1936, the Department of Railways and Canals was amalgamated with the Department of Marine and the Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of National Defence to form the Department of Transport. [[[Listed in the National census records for Coventry in 1861 is a Lewes Rubidge whose occupation is given as a Dial Painter.( Someone at the time pencilled in "Deaf and Dumb" next to his entry !) He seems to have disappeared from Coventry by the next census.]]] John Rubidge has informed me that the information regarding "Lewes Rubidge" is incorrect and should be deleted.
Having gone over your web page I hope u don't mind me taking the liberty of comparing my information with yours. I cannot vouch for the complete accuracy of what I have. It was obtained from an aunt who received it from Marge Rubidge (in South Africa,) who got it from an old family Bible. However, I do believe I have a little more on the SA Rubidge's, which u may want to add to your web page in Branch 5. As far as I know, it is correct.
This is what I have copied down exactly:

*I don't know now who is meant by "son of above." I always assumed it was Eleanor Lark Payne. I could be wrong.

we have a number of records of our family. we have to sort it out still. we are probably going to be donating some rubidge things to the museum in peterborough.
by all accounts, we are descendants of capt. charles rubidge, the one the emigrated first.
thats our connection. we also have the autobiographical sketch in our family tree stuff.
we also have a book published by cpt. portlock, who i believe was capt. charles unlce.
it is an account of sailing around the west coast of canada along with some other exotice locations from the later 1700's. the colour plates in the book are beautiful.
we also have some embroidery known to be rubidge hierloom from the 1700's. it is of england.
my dad was Beaumont (not beaufort)
he was born august 15th 1923 died september 5, 1988 andrew, lindsay and thomas are also all deceased.
contact nick in bc for his father birth and death dates.
my dad was a tool engineer. he moved to windsor after being a flight mechanic in the maritime during the war. he serviced planes for the RCAF that went out looking for U boats off the cdn. coast.
he moved to windsor where he became tool engineer and in 1965 started working in warren michigan. we lived in st. clair beach, a small town outside of windsor in ontario.
my uncle tom, moved and died in california, where my cousin now lives, reginald.
lindsay lived in a suburb of toronto called weston, he passed away a few years ago of cancer. his 2nd wife recently passed away, also of cancer.
my cousin ann, lindsay's daughter lives in dundas ontario and is also very much into our family tree.
my grandfather, lived in a large house called hopewell in erindale, an area near mississauga, next to toronto. he died in 1930 and basically the family went into poverty, losing everything, including their nice house. my uncle lindsay had polio. my uncle andrew was sent to england to and aunt, supposedly a lady in waiting to queen victoria. that would be on the gordon side. he lived in england, went to oxford and then was sent to africa during WWII. he stayed in africa after the war. my cousins were all born in the sudan.
oddly enough they are back in canada on the west coast.
beau, my father, had 3 kids. my adopted brother Geoffrey, who is deceased (born april 16th 1957, died march 13th 1987) my sister born june 20 1960, currently living in welling, kent england. and me, born may 15th 1965 in windsor ontario, currently living in toronto.
lindsay had 3 daughters, ann, hilda and brenda
andrew had 3 kids, nick, linda, and pipsi
tom had one son, reginald
My name is Melissa Rubidge. I do not believe that any of my close relatives are directly related to you, but my dad and aunt (his sister) were in the list of "other Rubidges". My dad's name is Frederick James Rubidge
His father is the second, and of course, his father's name is the same, although my grandfather didn't grow up with his father because he died in a war (I believe). My father's siblings are (oldest to youngest) Jan Rubidge (Brendell), Frederick James RubidgeIII, Darell Rubidge, Mark Rubidge, Rita Rubidge (Pecilunas), and Laura Rubidge (who was also listed in "other Rubidges". They all actually grew up in Chicago, IL. Their mother's name is Helen Rubidge. She died Dec. 1994. I'll get her maiden name and other info on the first Frederick James Rubidge from my dad and then I'll email you again. I have two brothers- Frederick James RubidgeIV and Daniel William Rubidge.
My father- Fred J. Rubidge III is married to Elaine Ruth Fabricius Rubidge (my mother).
My middle name is Helen (named after my grandmother).
Rita Rubidge (Pecilunas) is married to Jim Pecilunas.
Mark Rubidge is married to Janell and they have a son named Markie.
Jan Rubidge (Brendall) is married to Dave Bredall. They now live in Wisconsin.
I will talk to my dad about everyone's middle names and some other missing details and email you again soon. Thanks for emailing me so quickly. We have been trying to look up other Rubidge's on the internet, but we only found those actually listed in the phone book. we never thought another Rubidge would be doing the same thing. Your web pages are really great, Thanks for taking the time to do all of it, I'm sure it wasn't easy. My grandpa (Frederick II) has a book written by Captain Rubidge.

My research is actually on my great-grandfather, Cornelius John Soule. He married Anna , daughter of Alfred Richard Rubidge (your branch 0d, which I will be able to add to for you) , in Port Hope, Ontario, on October 5, 1875. They later lived in Guelph, Ontario until 1880, when according to a newspaper article they left Guelph to move to Denver, Colorado. I know that Anna had siblings who lived there. I was hoping to connect up with their descendants and that they might be able to give me some information about their time there. It would only have been a year or two, as in 1882 they showed up in Brandon, Manitoba.

Dear 4th Cousin, twice removed,
I've been spending that last year intermittently researching information about my family, one line of which comprises the Rubidges, primarily using information in my possession from the scrapbooks of my great grandfather, Frederick Wood Rubidge and his older brother Charles Marter Rubidge.
...
At present, I am transcribing information from the clippings in the two scrapbooks and will forward the material to you as I proceed. I have also been looking through the material at the Peterborough Museum and Archives, which is about half way between Ottawa, our home, and Toronto.
I do have some information on the descendants of William Rubidge and Mary Smith and Mary Costall through to Charles Portlock Rubidge:
1. Sarah Fanny Rubidge Courtney (or is it Courtenay?): Sarah Fanny was Samuel Rubidge's cousin. My great grandfather gives her birth date as Nov. 26, 1726, but I notice in notes that Charles Marter Rubidge took from the British Museum (No. 5533) that the date is 1725/26, because of the year change occurring on March 25 until 1752.
[Compiled info from my parents says Courtenay, b.1725; Tree from David John R. says Courtenay and Courtney, b. 5 Feb 1736; so does Derek Edgar R.'s letter.]
2. Robert Henry Rubidge, father of Capt. Charles, probably was born on Nov. 26, 1764, according to the notes of Charles Marter R.
[David John R. says "In fact Jeff Robert Henry was born in 1759 not 26th Nov 1764. I have a badly written entry of birth. The handwriting is horrible but I can make out the year 1759." However, one of his trees says 26 Nov 1764; also Derek Edgar R.'s letter says 1764.]
3. Margaret Ann Gilmour died in 1795, according to what Capt. Charles gives us in his autobiographical sketch. I suspect 1795 is the correct date, because he was sent to his uncle because of her death, and enlisted in 1796 in the navy. Thus, I suspect that the stillborn son (b. 1800) is not so. I suspect the MAG died with the stillborn daughter in 1795.
[d. 4 Jan 1800 is from David John R.'s Tree.]
4. Susannah Rubidge was, according to Charles Marter Rubidge (see above) was born in 1761.
[b. 31/?/1760 is from David John R.'s Tree.]
5. Sarah Fanny Rubidge, b. 28 Oct 1766 died on 10 Dec 1767 according to Charles Marter R.
[d. 1 Dec 1767 is from David John R.'s Tree.]
6. Hannah Payne Jones was born on Nov 14, 1790, and died Nov 24, 1876, according to Charles Marter R.
7. Capt. Charles was born on April 30 according to his autobiographical sketch.
[my autobiographical sketch is a typewritten copy -- though there could be an error in it; b. 30 Apr 1787 according to David John R.'s Tree.]
8. Edmund (I think this is correct) Rubidge drowned in the Otonabee River at Cambleton ON.
9. Sarah Maria Russell is correct according to the church entry.
10. Vincent Clementi was the son of the composer Muzio Clementi. I have a fair amount of information on him in the scrap books and will eventually send you a transcription. He graduated from Cambridge and was ordained by the Bishop of Canterbury and then came to Canada and was the first vicar of the parish at Lakefield, ON.
11. Walter Boswell Rubidge died 23 Sept 1900 at his residence at 658 euclid Avenue, Toronto, (not Winnipeg) according to the many newspaper accounts I have.
12. Henrietta Ann Marter was the daughter of Dr. Peter Marter. Marter is the correct spelling.
13. Margaret A. E. Rubidge's full given names are Margaret Ann Elizabeth.
14. Mary Violet (Daisy) Rubidge created quite a scandal when she ran off to Chicago with a physician. I'll send you this when I get to it.
15. I can send you a more complete coverage of the descendants of Walter Boswell's line if you want it. It may resolve some of your concerns about unlinked Rubidges. If you use Family Tree Maker, perhaps I can send you the file.

My father is researching his paternal grandmother's family. She was born in Coventry on 14 October 1881. Her maiden name was Rose Ann Rubidge. On 7 September 1902 she married his grandfather Horace Hugh Roberts and in 1925 they migrated to Australia with their four children. Rose Ann had siblings named Eliza H. - born 1877, Mary A. - born 1878, William W. - born 1880 and Edith born 1883. [Her father was] named William Wallace Rubidge, watchmaker, born 1854 (?) in Pentonville, and [her mother was] named Charlotte H. born 1854 (?) in Folleshille, Warwickshire (think that's how you spell it??).

The Geological Society (February 1870) Scientific Memoirs III
Thomas Henry Huxley.
Richard Nathaniel Rubidge, M.B. Lond., who was well known as an enthusiastic labourer in the geology of South Africa, died suddenly, at Port Elizabeth, on the 8th of August, 1869. Beginning his medical studies under Dr. John Atherstone, of Port Elizabeth, his habit of accurate observation was acquired and fostered in company with his fellow pupil and friend, Dr. W. G. Atherstone, of that town, also known as an ardent and successful geological explorer of South Africa, some time in company with the late Mr. A. G. Bain, who first worked out and mapped the geology of that region.
[522] In 1854 Dr. Rubidge was requested by the merchants of Port Elizabeth to visit and report upon the newly-discovered gold-diggings near Smithfield, in the Orange River Sovereignty. In company with Mr. Paterson he made a careful examination of the spot, and found that gold in small quantities was associated with quartz in the meridional set of trap-dykes there intersecting the Dicynodon or Karoo beds. In his clear and concise communication of these results to the Geological Society of London (Quart. Journ. vol. xi. p. 1, &c.), Dr. Rubidge mentions a fact that may be of interest in connection with the possible origin of the diamonds that have of late been so profusely found in Orange River territories, namely, that in the eastern ranges of the Stormberg, beyond Aliwal, the anthracitic coal of the Karoo beds has been converted into plumbago by the volcanic dykes. Hence it is possible that, by further change, purer carbon has been elicited from the carbonaceous matter by volcanic or metamorphic agency in the Natal ranges, and has been brought down in the form of diamond by the rivers, together with their common agate gravel, derived from the same igneous and often amygdaloidal rocks (see also his letter in the Journ. Geol. Soc. vol. xii. p. 237).
In the same year (1854), at the instance of a Mining Company, Dr. Rubidge went to Namaqualand, to report upon its metal-producing capabilities. The results are given by him in the Geological Society's Journ. vol. xiii., a short notice only appearing in the previous volume. The gneissic and schistose rocks of this part of Western Africa being quite new to him, and full of interesting mineralogical characters, afforded a rich field of observation; and he was particularly struck with the probable metamorphic origin of some granite, and with the apparent silicification of some bands of schist, covered unconformably by sandstone, through which water had carried silica to replace the original felspar and mica of the gneissic bands below. This view of the metamorphic condition of some quartzites Dr. Rubidge regarded as a key to the elucidation of certain sections seen in different parts of South Africa, and considered by him to be of a very difficult nature, if left to be explained according to the usual view of geologists. Thus, in 1858 (Geol. Soc. Journ. vol. xv. p. 196), he explained the section of Mitchell's Pass, at the village of Cores, otherwise than Mr. Bails had interpreted it; and regarded the great sandstone formation of Table Mountain as occurring again and again, in great patches of horizontal and unconformable beds, over the highly inclined schists and gneiss, both of the Cape and of Namaqualand, instead of dipping at Ceres down below the Devonian rocks of the Bokkeveld; and thus he made the [523] schistose rocks of Cape Town, of the Bokkeveld, George, and southern Uitenhage (whence he got Devonian fossils) to be all of the same date. Certainly a great advance was made in proving the continuation of the Bokkeveld schists into the last-named district; but whether the schists and slates of the Cape come into the same category still requires careful inquiry.
Examining the neighbourhood of the Zuerberg, in occasional journeys, Dr. Rubidge endeavoured to throw light on the stratification and structure of that country, showing that the Lower Ecca beds are probably of Devonian age. For the illustration of his views on this matter he sent several series of rocks and fossils to the Geological Society of London, and he communicated papers on the subject to that Society, to the 'Geologist,' to the British Association, and to the periodicals of Port Elizabeth. In 1864 he visited England, and travelled to the north with the special view of studying schistose and quartzose rocks like those of the Zuerberg. He brought with him many new fossils, of Secondary age, from the Uitenhage district, and went to considerable expense in getting them properly examined and determined, intending ultimately to produce a general work on the geology of the colony. The fossils constituted a valuable addition to the South African collection in the Geological Society's Museum, and were fully described, with illustrations, in the Society's Journal, by Mr. R. Tate, in 1867.
So long ago as 1854, Dr. Rubidge wrote to his geological correspondents in London on the subject of aerial denudation, which had not then received so much attention from European geologists as it deserved. In 1866 he reproduced the chief points of his letters in the 'Geological Magazine,' No. 20, bringing forward evidence of the enormously extensive and long-continued denudation of the interior of South Africa, subsequent to its leaving the sea and since the lacustrine deposits of the Karoo formations were drained dry.
As an observer and as a generalizer, then, Dr. Rubidge was energetic and bold, adding much to the store of geological facts and thought, though working hard throughout in his professional practice, and often suffering from ill-health. Heart disease has taken him off suddenly (at the age of about forty-eight) from amongst his friends, before his well-loved work was finished as he wished; but he had always given his best attention to the advancement of science in general, and of geology in particular, among the community around him; and having always identified himself with the Literary and Scientific Institutions of Port Elizabeth, and [524] showed the greatest personal interest in its public Library, Museum, and public Hospital, his townsmen, who, in large numbers of all grades of society attended his funeral, regret [sic] him as a kind warm-hearted friend,–a loss which will not be readily replaced.–(T. R. J.)

I have said very little about my brother, though as may be supposed he meant a great deal to us in those days. He was full of life and it seems to me wonderful the steady way in which he went on year after year in that store. Gradually he worked his way up to be head clerk, though then he only earned $400 a year. Charlie Rubidge, who afterwards married Mr. Brendon's daughter Mary, was also in the store, but he left before Graham. It was rather a dull life for a boy. He had one friend Goodwin by name and they used to go fishing and sometimes "coon shooting", but his amusements were very few. His tastes were all for a country life.
[This refers to Charles Marter Rubidge and Mary Ann Brendon]
http://wsb.datapro.net/willis/chapter26.html
We got to Winnipeg about 7.30 a.m. and Mr. Rubidge, my old friend, met me there and saw to my having some breakfast. Then he got me a ticket, but only to Portage la Prairie; they would sell no tickets nor check any luggage further. It was perhaps noon when we reached the Portage, and the picture it presented comes clearly before me after forty years or more. ...
... I have lots of information on the Rubidge family (also on the Southey family) which I would be happy to share. I even have a book which is in large part on the Rubidge and Southey families of pioneers in South Africa and Rhodesia. Other information includes information on a branch of the same Rubidge family that came to Canada at the same time that our branch settled in South Africa, soon after the Napoleonic war. The two brothers Robert Henry (S.Africa) and Charles (Canada) were retired as naval commanders on the cessation of hostilities. One of the main Rubidge homes in South Africa (formerly the home of Dr Sidney Rubidge, palaontologist and founder of the Dinosaur museum there) is now operated by its Rubidge owners as a guest house. The family is traced back to 1700 and could I suspect be traced further with a little determination. Interesting connections by marriage include Captain Nathaniel Portlock, who was with Captain Cook when he was killed and went around the world on another celebrated expedition himself as captain of his ship - he wrote a noteworthy book about it which still exists. The copy in the Robarts Library, University of Toronto is unfortunately lost, and I suspect stolen, so I have yet to see it. ...
...
Much of what I have is not on computer or is in a book, "Twin Trails" by Marjorie Davies, which I have, which gives a fair amount of information on Rubidges with transcriptions of original documents.
I do have various family stories that I think would interest you. Even one on the original introduction of willow trees to South Africa by Robert Henry Rubidge, from which all willow trees in S.Africa are said to derive. And information from his diary, etc. I also have just a few photos that you may not have: Robert Henry Rubidge; Hannah Payne (Jones) Rubidge, his wife; Eleanor Dixie (Rubidge) Southey; George Southey, her husband; etc. I have a xerox copy of a sketch portrait of Cmdr Charles Rubidge from a book (must check the reference) that is yet another likeness to add to the three very nice portraits you have on your site. Also, as I recall, a copy of the sketch of the dead Napoleon by Joseph Rubidge - but no mention in the story of his making a death mask and I am inclined to doubt this.
Some further comments on reading your Rubidge history:
I didn't know that Samuel and Sarah's son Robert had the middle name "Henry". Are you sure this isn't confusing him with his son of the same name? Regarding his wife, Margaret Ann Gilmour, I have a certain amount of miscellaneous information on her relations which I have summarized on a chart which I could send you if you are interested. My records all give her birth surname as Denoon or DeNoon, not Dendon as you have it.
I have an outline of the ancestry of Hannah Payne Jones the wife of Robert Henry Rubidge, in two versions, very similar but with some significant differences, and of his 2nd wife Eleanor Lark Payne and how they are related to each other. This is derived apparently from a chancery suit, the Rubidges having apparently made a claim on the estate of a distant noble relative, Harriet Mangini, Comtesse de Alte. I also have some biographical information on Capt Robert Henry Rubidge himself.
On the descendants of Cmdr Charles Rubidge, in addition to the account I mentioned, there are published articles on his Orde and Dunsford descendants. Cmdr Rubidge's wife was sister of Mrs Mannico Clarke ... (writing hard to read).
I have much information beyond what you have on the S.African Rubidges, including some on the family of Charles Rubidge and Louisa Leisching, and I know there is more to be had but I never followed up to obtain it all. Quite a lot also in Twin Trails, which has a wealth of information on Rubidges and Southeys, but is put away in a trunk right now so I can't tell you right away what is there.
There is a Rubidge coat of arms and crest. I have the crest from the envelope of an old letter, and a signet sealing-wax stamp with the crest which I only found on investigation pertained to Rubidge. It presumably belonged to Dr Richard Nathaniel Rubidge who dsp and with whom my ancestor Anna Southey (m. Murray), his niece, had lived for some time.
Much of my information on Rubidges comes from many years of correspondence with Mrs Marge Shearing in S.Africa, and from her delightfully written "Family Book" which I have in photocopy minus the pictures. She was a careful family historian and a descendant of Murrays, Rubidges and Southeys.

30th Day, Charles son of Robert & Margaret Ann Rubidge
This is a true copy of the Register
of Baptism in the Parish of St. George's in the East
in the County of Middlesex. Witness this 22d May 1805
Robert Richardson Curate
I have checked the parish register for Robert Henry's christening at St Michael's Wood Street, Cheapside, London but all records of that church were destroyed in the Blitz. The site is now buried under roads near the Barbican.
However, I have a copy of his baptismal record from the Public Records Office which gives his date of christening as 30th June 1786. Before a young man could sign up for the Royal Navy, he had to provide evidence of his DOB (to make sure he was not underage, the Navy not allowing people to become Lts until they were 18) . I also have a copy of his passing certificate as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy ,dated 20th January 1806 , also from the PRO and his naval record. I will send you these if you send me an address.
I saw on the same visit the same details for Charles Rubidge but didn't pursue his details for obvious reasons. I wish I had now since the PRO is such a daunting place and I can't imagine going again shortly.
I have other bits and pieces if you are interested: a print of Joseph William's painting of Napoleon; lots of prints of Saint Olave's in Southwark from the 1600s ( now demolished and only the tower remaining in a school yard). It is now a grim part of London but of course was very handy for the sea in those days.
I found at the Southwark Records Office the original map of the dissenters' burial ground, Locksfields, just S of St Olave's, the stamping ground of a famous preacher, Clayton, friend of Robert Browning, but saw no plot marked for Joseph William so wonder if he was really buried there. Too many leads to follow!
Also I am unsure about the date [of birth of Robert Rubidge the father of Robert Henry Rubidge] My information ... is that Robert Henry's dad, Robert Rubidge, son of Samuel and Margaret Anne Gilmour, was christened on 26/11/1764 in St Mary's, Rotherhithe but I have not yet checked the parish register.
...
Robert Henry Rubidge, my great grandmother's great grandfather lived for a short while in Wales , on a farm called Gledwyn which I visited last summer. I found during a visit to the local records office that he had a son by a local dairymaid and am off next week to follow a lead from a descendant of the people who raised him following Robert Henry's emigration to SA in 1821.

I think we have definitive proof that Charles was indeed born in 1787. I visited the London Metropolitan Archives today and looked in the index of names for those born in 1783 and baptised in St George in the East but he was not recorded there. He was, however, listed in the 1787 index of surnames and so I checked on the microfilm record of the parish register. He is there, baptised on the 28th May 1787. The actual record reads, "Charles,S of Robert Rubidge, Hosier, by Mart Ann, Wapg St" and he is recorded as being 29 days old. The 't' of Margaret and 'g' of Wapping are small superscripts.
ABDULLAH "Doolie" Rubidge, who died recently at 76, was a sportsman of immense talent who made his mark as an opening bowler, earning three South African Malay cricket team caps.
One of South African cricket's most popular and respected figures of his generation, he was the longest-serving captain of the Transvaal Malay side, which he first represented in the mid-1940s.
In the final and most difficult period of a long illness before his death, Rubidge asked to spend time with his friends, fellow cricketers Dawood Hassan and Shorty Bagus.
When honoured at a function at Lenasia's Tasmanians Cricket Club last month, he was there in his wheelchair, insisting to his sons that he be allowed to stay. Rubidge also won Transvaal rugby colours and his agility stood him in good stead when he made numerous appearances as goalkeeper for Rangers Football Club.
Cricket historian and friend Yusuf Garda described him as a cricket legend in his own lifetime. "He was self-taught and spent many hours mastering his skills."
Rubidge leaves four sons and 17 grandchildren.
