>Subject: My Great grand father and grand father
>Hello, I just thought that I would add some information to the Rubidge Genealogy page, My maternal Great grandfathers name was William George Rubidge (Branch ten in the tree) , my grandfather was Harry Alfred Rubidge. My grandmother was born in 1891 and her name was Amy Daisy Mills, she married Harry Alfred Rubidge (his second marriage, I am not sure if his first wife died or he divorced her) he was 37 years older than my grandmother. Note: Apparently Harry had children from his previous marriage but my mother and grandmother did not have any contact with them and have no idea who or where they are. My mother Lillian Amy Rubidge was born in 1921 and died in 1982 in Alberta Canada. Her sister Hilda was born in 1925 and died of TB in 1953, she was married but did not have any children. My mother Lillian Amy Rubidge married Charles Albert Rodd, around 1942, they had 4 children, Lesley Quendolyn Rodd, B, Shoreham 1943, Peter William Rodd B, Brighton 1944, Jack Charles Rodd, B, Hove 1945, Terrence Arthur Rodd B, Aldershot, 1947, died California 2002. I am Peter William Rodd, we do not have any history other than what I am giving you of our maternal side of the family. Could you please let me know if this information has been received and if it is useful to you. Regards, Peter Rodd

About this time the labour-market began to be overstocked, in consequence of so many men having, at the close of the long war, been discharged from the army and navy.

About this period [c1840], being in London on business, I chanced to pass a coach-builder's establishment, bearing the name of 'Rubridge.' Knowing that my wife had an uncle and cousins of that name in the trade, I entered...

Unfortunately I note an error regarding Ernest Augustus Rubidge, one of Ellen's brothers. He was in fact married to Emily Lavinia Bearwish of Mile End, London. [marriage registration records attached]
I do have an addition to the children of James Charles Rubidge and Susan Spittle.
Adam was in fact Adia Rubidge born 1840 St. Pancras London, she married my ancestor, John Mason in 1861 Marylebone, London. John was a master brush manufacturer and was the son of John Mason and Elizabeth Robinson, Elizabeth came from the wealthy woollen manufactures of Coventry, Warwickshire.
John Mason and Adia Rubidge had one daughter, Gertrude Florence Rubidge born in 1867 Hornsey, London. I have traced the family to the 1881 census then they disappear, I have also unsuccessfully searched the passenger lists that are now online.
Two of John's sister's attended a girls boarding school in Peckham, as did Adia, I would think that is how they met.
I have some information regarding Rubidge decendants of branch 8b.
Robert Henry Rubidge. b. 9 Jun 1852. and Agnes Elizabeth Rubidge. b. 1857. are my Great great grandparents. Daisy Portlock Rubidge was my great grand mother. What is missing from your website are Daisy's children, of which she had two (with husband Herbert Riggall, she was Boer War bride who moved to Tasmania, Australia):
Agnes "Nessie" Elizabeth Rubidge RIGGALL born in Ross, Tasmania, Australia 27th Sep 1909. Married Harry Roy MICHAEL
Children:
-Marion Ottilie Michael Leiba m. Courtney Anthony Reginald LEIBA had children
- Nadine Leiba
- Kenrick Leiba
Ottilie Noel Rubidge RIGGALL b. Ross, Tasmania, Australia 21st Dec 1910. m. Leslie Tasker
- Leslie Patricia Tasker m. Michael Hunt
- Michelle HuCENAIDJA
nt m. Robert Reynoso (San Fransisco).
- Richelle Reynoso
- Susan Hunt had son Ryan Hunt
...
1) I forgot to add that Ottilie Noel Rubidge RIGGALL in branch 8b was known as "Poppy". That might be useful to anybody to trying to research her since I don't think anyone actually referred to her as Ottilie.
2) Agnes Elizabeth Rubidge was a relatively well known artist in her area. We actually have two of her paintings at our house which I might send you pictures of when I get the time. Her husband was a prospector and the used to travel around in a bollock wagon and she would paint when he stopped to do prospecting. Her daughter Daisy and granddaughter "Nessie" also had artistic talent. Daisy used to paint though as far we know she never did any professionally. My Grandmother Agnes Elizabeth Rubidge Riggall was an art teacher and has sold a few paintings. One of her paintings was hung in an Australian women's art competition exhibition called the Portia Geach Memorial Award ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portia_Geach_Memorial_Award ) where the painting had to be short listed to be hung (this is also hanging in my house). My mother and I also dabble a bit though not professionally, we are both in scientific fields. So there is a bit of a history of art in the family.
3) Ivy Earle Rubidge also came over to Tasmania (also a Boer War bride) I will give more information when I am sure of the details. She married a Campbell, had at least one daughter and lived into her 90s.
My great, grandmother, Elizabeth Harper Irwin Gray, was Hattie Harper Thompson's sister and I know that you are aware that their brother, John Harper, married Fanny Shaw Rubidge.
John lived well into his 90's as did my grandmother's sisters (born 1909, 1911 and 1913) who all remembered him. They told me about Daisy (they called her Violet), Fanny's daughter, but I'm sure they didn't know about Fanny's other children as I specifically remember asking them this question. When I think of it, my aunts were perhaps not born or were very little by the time Fanny's children left the Peterborough area, so it could be that they didn't know that Fanny had other children besides Mary Violet and Robert Nathaniel.
One of my aunts, Margaret, never married and stayed at home to care for her parents - George and Annie Irwin (George was Elizabeth's first son). The 2 photos that are attached came from her...
The first photo...Fanny Shaw Rubidge Harper with her daughter, Lily Rubidge was one that I just couldn't figure out because her daughter's name, of course, was Violet. I couldn't understand who Lily was until I read your website. It was taken by J. E. Waters, 414 E 63rd Street, Chicago. Unfortunately, no date, but I'm hoping that you will be able to help with this.
The second one...Fanny Shaw Rubidge Harper looks like it was taken in a much more casual setting and there isn't a photo credit. She's looks older, and again, if you could possibly assist with the approximate date, I would appreciate it.
I also found the following...I'm not sure if you knew that Mary Violet was buried in Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough:
