#All may have been born after this family moved to USA in approx 1881, this is the section of the family in Pittsburgh, PA whom I mentioned. Ray was the Uncle who was in contact with an Aunt of mine in 1967, he may well be dead by now, but I know he had 2 daughters, one of which I believe works in Texas State Uni. Supposedly Harriet Smith was a Doctor, and so was one of the sons.#

#I will check this out with my grandmother who remembers this part of the family and see if she can remember any more. It seems to me that reginald is a family name, it has occured times in the small part of the Rewbridge family I have, any ideas?#
Children of William Rewbridge and Martha
*Gladys m. Hwyel Owen
George*
The above info was mainly from my Grandmother and a cousin who knew the Rewbridge part of the family.
For your info the change of name happened as below.
Rubidge (the name used by Robert Henry Rubidge to baptise his 3 legitimate Children in St. Ishmeal's church Ferryside) Rubridge (the name of George Lloyd in the 1851 Census) Rewbridge (the name of both William and Henry's families in he 1881 Census)
Haven't found any Rowbridge's myself, but I will have a look, my Mother's cousin remembers a Rebridge spelling as well, but I will have to research this.
*****************************************************
Family tales, not to be taken too seriously
The story went that George Lloyd Rewbridge's father was a Prussian Colonel (according to your info this is wrong) Also the story said that George was born illegitimately because his father's wife did not produce a male heir (also a bit iffy according to your info) It was also said that he was left land by his father in his will, but the land was taken by the 3 Solicitors who were left in charge. George was supposedly brought up by tenant farmers on his Fathers land (obviously after his father went to South Africa according to your info) and that he married the daughter of these farmers. I also know that there was a Squire Rewbridge who owned land in Neath, South Wales.
Currently I am trying to trace the will of Robert Henry Rubidge to see if it mentions George Lloyd, also I am trying to trace the squire Rewbridge and see if I can link him into the family.

History of the Rice Lake reserves, Mary Jane Muskratte Simpson R.R. 3, Cobourg 1953
The story is told of a pioneer settler, Mr. Rubidge, after whom Rubidge Street in Peterborough is named. He loved to fish from this little island, and the Ojibways of Hiawatha gave him the Indian name of "Zhaw-boomin", meaning "gooseberry"; He had a family of four or five girls who were known to the Indians as "zhaw-boomin-equassug", the Gooseberry Girls. One of them later married Reginald Drayton of Gore's Landing.
["Capt." Charles Rubidge had only 3 dau., so this may refer to someone else.]

Dear Sir,
Serendipitously, I came across your transcript of "AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH by CAPTAIN CHARLES RUBIDGE, R. N.". Although hardly of great moment, this distinguished gentleman's memory appears to have failed him in one minor respect ... «The Aetna, the only Bomb-ship with the Fleet at that time, for two days engaged the Batteries on Isle De Aix, when the Devastation joined.» : the ship that joined was named Thunder (Devastation, by contrast, was in the Baltic at this time). Such confusion would not be unexpected: all three bomb-vessels - Aetna, Devastation, and Thunder - bombarded Fort Catalina (guarding Cadiz Bay) on November 24th, 1810.
Best wishes,
(Dr.) Roger Peters

According to my records, Henry Alfred is Charles Portlock's son. Charles was the deputy postmaster in Otanabee , Canada and Charles was (hopefully) one of the Captains sons....
... And I was afraid the Rubidge branch would not be well documented. My mom rarely spoke of them because her dad, George A, died when she was a kid. She was legally adopted by my gramma's second hubby who was an awesome grandfather....so out of respect, my mom rarely mentioned the Rubidges. She did tell me however, that George A had a series of strokes and was an invalid during the end of his life, and that he died on her birthday when she was sitting on his lap...
While going through all the old paperwork from my Grandmother's stuff, I found a letter that explains the relationship to the Captain, etc - and I have a photo of George A taken in 1889, as well as one taken near the end of his life. I also stumbled upon where he might be buried, in Chicago, and when I called Mt. Hope Cemetery, I was told there was "a whole bunch of them". So now I am planning a trip into Chicago to go Grave hunting....
Another interesting aside, there was always a portrait of the Captain over my grandparents fireplace, and as kids, it creeped us because he does not look friendly and we swore his eyes followed us.... A few years ago, I recieved that portrait from my second grandpa. My sister, who works at the Phoenix Art Museum, expressed interest in it, and I couldn't seal up the original pkging fast enough to send it to her. The photo's of the portraits on your website are much older than the portrait our family has - I am assuming my sister still has it.....
According to a letter I found with my grandmother's things, the Captain was quite the "gay blade". The letter also says "Barry asked an old timer about the children of the Capt and he said 'six legitimate and heaven knows how many others.' In checking the 1861 census we found a 9 year old Indian Girl name Ann rubidge."
Other things you might find interesting in this letter (written by a Sue, who referred to my Grandmother as Aunt Nell): "That Maggie you spoke of was Henry A.'s sister. She married a Frances Archer and had Mary and John. Neither ever married. Mary died in 1944 and John drowned in the Otonabee (?) River. The cemetery records show that Henry A's brother Fred, "Died of his own hand" in 1878."
The letter also says "I found a funeral card for a baby Henry Rubidge 1884 2 months old. they must have lost one little boy that we didn't know about." They being Henry and Molly/Mary. So my grandpa George had a slightly older brother who didn't live long. Maybe I will find him on my trek to the cemetary.
...there is a piece of the tree missing which is my branch under Ernest Augustus Rubidge and Emily Ellen Parker. My great grandfather was Ernie Rubidge who died in WW1. He had a son named Ernest Augustus Rubidge who married and had four children: Phyllis, Joan, Alice and Ernest William Rubidge(my father). We all live in New Brunswick, Canada.
Wondering if you can help find my maternal grandmother - her maiden name was Jeannette Rubidge and her mother's name was Mary Rubidge. My brother says he remembers our mother saying that her mother was from Chicago and that her great-grandfather was Captain Rubidge. When looking at the Rubidge website, I see that one of Captain Rubidge's children, Charles, had a son named Henry Alfred Rubidge who moved to Chicago from Peterborough in 1875 and married a woman named Mary (surname and date?).
There are sons listed from this union and a mention of daughters but no names of these daughters. I think one of them was my grandmother Jeannette.
Now that my own mother is gone, I know only a little of what I remember her telling me when I asked (which was much too infrequently), and that was that her mother Jeannette married a widower named Harry Richter (with a ten year old son Richard Richter who later became a neurologist at the University of Chicago). My grandparents lived in LaPorte Indiana until my grandfather died leaving his young wife and two children - my mother Janet and her younger brother Leonard. My mother was four years old at the time.
To save money, they moved to Switzerland for a number of years before WW II. Upon returning, they moved to Palo Alto in California where there was a cousin or aunt Florence (surname unknown to me). However, I see other Florences in the Rubidge genealogy trail, as well as the name Leonard. My mother met my father, John Lyons Sullivan, at Stanford and later moved to Marysville in 1939 where he was a peach farmer and third generation Californian.
My mother was born in 1915 in LaPorte, but unfortunately I don't know the year my grandmother was born. However, I do know that she died in 1947 right before I was born, and I'm quite sure she had not yet reached the age of sixty. My guess is that she was born sometime in the 1890s.
All that is left of my Rubidge heritage (other than my middle name!) are two pictures of my great-grandmother Mary and one of her husband. Each captures dignified and prosperous looking individuals. I only wish I knew more about them.

Diary of Richard B. Rogers, 1884:
Wednesday September 17: Goodwin came for order to let water off at Buckhorn for which he said that Mr. Rubidge had given him order after which I found that Mr. R. had not.
[Note: The following passage is written in the Memoranda section of the diary.]
Wynn called on 29th to ask if brackets & stop logs could be put down at Bobcaygeon & stop logs at Fenelon. Went & saw Mr. Rubidge. He said I should put bk’s in & stop logs in at Bob’n & stop logs in at Fen. & that he would advise me to do so. He said it was ridiculous to say that water could not be run off the upper lakes by spring in order to prepare for the spring freshet.
...
Mr. Rubidge ordered brackets on dam at Buckhorn on Dec. 17. Water 28 ½ at Buckhorn Dec 30th.
