Our first semester we are covering the basics of working in Industry standard programs such as Corel Painter, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Students will have the opportunity to learn the elements and principles of design and how to use them in illustration and graphic design. This is a full year course.
GO TO THE COLOR WHEEL PAGE Link above to complete this first assignment. The required Chapter Reading for the Graphic Design classes only is located on TEAMS under files. There will be a quiz on the reading and on the color mandala.
This week every student needs to make a website and post at least part of an assignment you have done, even if it is still in-progress. That way, I can give you a progress grade because our in progress grades are due this week. Be sure to email me your website link stating clearly in the email what period and class you are in.
This assignment will be your introduction to Adobe Illustrator and teach you how to work in Adobe Illustrator to create a realistic Pop Art of yourself.
These tutorials will help you understand, practice, and develop the art and skill of working with type and also creating your own typefaces. You can start now and develop a healthy supplemental passive income. As a graphic designer, you need to understand how to best work with type/fonts. Type is fundamental to design and creating your own will better help you understand the beauty and power of a good typeface.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY2G0r9aPYo On this video he does a really good job of explaining how to lay out the foundation, (drawing the lines and angles) of creating type.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3gvbvvzqpY This is on inking in the type
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OYhq6HbJ4U This is a really fun way to start enjoying the playfulness of type and understanding the best structures and how to create graceful form in creating a script typeface. When you create your own script typeface, create several versions of the same letter. This gives you practice and you can compare and contrast the best forms. Look at some other script typefaces on Fontspace and study the best ones, (you know I love Mans Greback's work.) We can then scan your work in and use the best ones for your finished font alphabet. Here is a link to a font I just found that I really like: https://www.fontspace.com/queen-of-the-moon-font-f22426
If you look at the font photo of Madelican to the left, you will see a tiny grid on the bottom right that you click on when in Fontspace and it will show you all the letters of the alphabet in that font. https://www.fontspace.com/madelican-font-f41388
Here are the Performance standards relating to drawing and working with type:

2.3.2 Apply and adjust formatting to type
2.3.3 Construct graphic works utilizing and manipulating type
The Illustration by Anders Nilsen on the left is from this article from The New Yorker Magazine which is a magazine well known for it's wonderful illustrations and cartoons:
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/05/18/the-secret-lives-of-fungi
Your assignment is to Create an illustration on The Secret Lives of Fungi; ask yourself what would a fungi's secret life look like? The above article may help you get ideas. This is an excerpt from the above article by Hua Hsu that I found very interesting: "The largest living organism on earth today is a fungus in Oregon just beneath the ground, covering about 3.7 square miles and estimated to weigh as much as thirty-five thousand tons."
You can use traditional media or work on the computer.
Post to your webpage when done.
