Keefe Gnome Knitting Class
Ready to Get your Gnome on? Nothing says “holidays” better than gnomes. In this class you will learn step-by-step how to make a gnome. By the final class you will have one or more completed gnomes and be confident whipping up some more on your own. We will be learning the following: small-circumference circular knitting, i-cord, various increases and decreases, how to pick up stitches, and how to sew together parts, and stuff a knitted project. Be warned, gnome knitting can be addicting.
Prerequisites: knitting, purling, knitting in the round, and casting on.
Supplies to bring to first class: A US1 circular needle 32” or longer. A US2 circular needle 32” or longer. Approximately 20gms each of three different colors of fingering (or sock) weight yarn: for the hat, body, beard and nose.
We will learn a knit a basic gnome, and my simple instructions for him as well as stuffing will be included with the class. If you would like to make a gnome with stripes, or a different, fancier gnome, you will need to purchase pattern and supplies.
I highly recommend any of Imagine Landscapes Designs. If you want to make some smaller standard gnomes, I recommend the Never Not Gnoming pattern. For a wide selection of sizes and designs the Choose your Gnome Adventure pattern will keep you busy for a long time. You may knit any of her designs in class instead of, or in addition to, my simple gnome.
You may use any scrap sock yarn or purchase yarn. Mini-skeins are an excellent option for this project.
Leading Men Fiber Arts has mini-skeins for $7 each and free, fast, shipping over $20
Etsy has many mini-skeins and gnome yarn knitting kits. Some examples are:
KelliIntheMiddle Individual minis
Make sure you get fingering minis not dk or worsted.
Students are encouraged to contact the instructor ahead of time with any questions.
