Award winner Paul Mwadime Kombo (who received the Certificate of Excellence from TVNI) is certainly among the earlier adopters of Vetiver System in Kenya. He not only uses it on his maize farm, but also on fish pond embankments, for Voi riverbank stabilisation, and his plan is to become an expert for its use on roadsides.

ON-FARM RESULTS of Vetiver hedgerows are, as Paul sees it:

1. a noticeable reduction in soil erosion;

2. maize yield increase mainly due to increased moisture retention

3. reduced stem borer incidence near Vetiver hedgerows

4. added value of Vetiver thatch, mulch, fodder

5. compared to other grasses in the dry season, Vetiver remains (somewhat) green all year round

6. during floods the 'Vetiverised' farms accumulate fertility that was washed away from (unprotected) other farms.
