In class our group was assigned to apply perrenialism to this hierarchy of needs and we came to the conclusion that according to perrenialism, higher education should begin at the Physiological level. There are elements that perrenialists feel are important to everyone no matter what their background is, and they should be taught these things. This means that there are universal teachings that are also important to everyone starting at birth.
The second question we were asked is how we can change society's view of education as perrenialists. I believe that a perrenialist would believe that in order to change society's view, it would begin with teaching universal elements of education that are vital for our society to support education starting at their physiological needs.
Relationship with my Metaphor- I had an experience this past April 2012, where I made a plan to travel to Hermosillo, Mexico with my friend Eric to visit our mission. I was 22 at the time and familiar with that area of Mexico, and felt that I could be confident in carrying out my plan and still be safe. When I presented this plan to my Mom, she did not agree with it. She was worried about my safety and my expenses. I assured her that I had the money necessary saved up so I could make this road trip, and I knew which areas in Mexico were safe to drive through and visit and which areas I would avoid. She still did not agree with my decision but knew that it was ultimately my decision.
The response I received from my Dad was entirely different from the response my Mom had and was one that I was not expecting. My Dad encouraged me to go and knew that I should make this trip now because I have the opportunity now and may not have another opportunity in the near future to go. My Dad even offered me extra money to be able to use on the trip.
My Mom had a pragmatic/realistic view of this road trip because she was more concerned with my safety. It was realistic because she was basing it on her realistic view that whoever goes to Mexico is in danger (although this is a false view). My Dad had an existential view of this trip because I came up with the plan and he encouraged me to do what I needed to make it happen, and not only did he encourage me in this aspect, but he also provided me with resources that he thought I could use. My view that I took at the time was an idealistic approach to this trip. I felt that if the trip went as planned (ideally) then I would have the resources necessary. I also felt that if the situation was ideal, then I would be safe in Mexico because I was familiar with the area. I also took a perrenial approach because I got upset that my Mom thought the area was so dangerous and I felt that everyone should know that this area of the world is not as dangerous as people believe it to be. They need to experience it to understand this.
