Free Appropriate Public Education
Something that we can do to provide FAPE (free appropriate public education) for all is to have teachers that are capable of structuring their teaching to all students. Teachers need to recognize that each student is special and unique and capable of higher learning, but the teaches need to find something that makes them unique. We also need to change society’s view of education. There is often a lack of funding for education there isn’t much support from society. In my school district where I grew up, there was always a lack of support from society and levy bills would have to be voted on several times before passing. Our community felt that people should be self-reliant, including students, an d therefore did not deserve special treatment. FAPE was more focused on those with special disabilities such as mental disabilities or physical restraints, but everyone deserves FAPE because everyone is unique. Having this support from society will help them realize that everyone is special and unique and have great potential as learners. Students themselves need to realize that they are unique and have something special to provide to others. Many students don't feel they're appreciated because they are young and adults feel they are more unique because they, in their minds, have more knowledge. Students need to feel appreciated and valued.
The way that FAPE applies to my metaphor is that there are some people that are less fortunate in their financial situations, and are unable to take a long, expensive road trip because they cannot afford it. They need to understand that they can make an inexpensive trip to a place nearby and still take from that trip the same or even more than those that take an expensive trip. In order for them to understand that they still have great potential to make a worthwhile trip, their parents, peers, or mentors need to know their circumstances as well and know what they are capable of accomplishing and encourage them to do those things. No matter what our circumstances are, we can find what makes us unique and will allow us to become higher learners. Those that are less fortunate will be given encouragement and support in order to be successful.
Who gets more out of their temple session, a student that can only afford to walk to the Rexburg temple from their apartment or a person that can afford to fly to Washington D.C. to see the temple there?
