I offer beginner surfing lessons with special rates for guests of InnTheGardens Bed & Breakfast.
I taught myself to surf in 2007. And by that I mean that I borrowed a board, and was told to get on and go. After a few months, I went out and surfed the day after a tropical storm pulled through. 13 Stitches above my eyebrow taught me an important lesson about surfing here in NJ. When you go under, stay down until the wave passes over, when you stay up, protect your head with your hands.
Since then I have seen "Surf Lessons" taught by multiple surf schools. I even took a surf camp with my sister in Nicaragua. On thing I never understood was why they have people pop up on the board on the beach. Many people who try surfing for the first time don't get that far.
What to expect: We will leave from the B&B at a time made by appointment. The time of the lesson will depend on your schedule, the tide, and how crowded the beach is. During the summer time, the beach is most crowded from 11am-3pm. Weekends can get pretty crazy at the surfing beach. You try packing 40 people in one block fighting for a wave off a jetty. With that being said, weekends I recommend lessons before the lifeguards show up, or after they leave. You can surf any beach in ocean city when lifeguards are not around.
The first lesson of surfing is how to carry the surfboard. It builds muscle, endurance, and character. Do NOT drag the board on the ground. Hold it under your arm, or over your head.
$30/hour for a private lesson.
$50/hour for a lesson for 2 people.
$20/hour for per person for group lessons.
Beginner boards may be used after the lesson for the rest of the day - depending on availability.
