In those 42 non-emission counties, all passenger cars and light trucks with a GVWR of 11,000 pounds and less will be subject to this visual ant-tampering check. This is regardless of fuel type and includes both gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. Vehicles that are registered as Classic or Collectible are exempt from this requirement.

The following items are checked to ensure that they are not removed, disconnected or the wrong type for the vehicle:

    • Catalytic Converter

    • EGR Valve

    • PCV Valve

    • Fuel Inlet Restrictor

    • AIR pump (aka. smog pump)

    • EVAP control system (aka. charcoal canister)

If all 6 of these items are present, hooked up and appear to be the correct type the vehicle will pass this portion of the safety inspection. For more detail about each component feel free to view the 10 slide PowerPoint at this link.

Vehicles that are registered in emissions counties are exempt for this portion of the inspection procedure as they are required to meet the emissions inspection regulations of their county before they can receive a safety inspection sticker.
