Presence of implantable medical devices
Incorrectly recording the absence of implantable devices poses a serious safety risk to crematorium staff and can result in significant damage to cremation equipment. Battery‑powered devices such as pacemakers may explode under extreme heat if they are not removed prior to cremation.
Attending practitioners are responsible for reviewing the medical records thoroughly when completing the MCCD, including verifying the presence of any hazardous implantable medical devices. National guidance emphasises that hazardous implants may endanger crematorium staff or equipment if not identified and removed.
