On Tuesday morning we departed at 8 o’clock for Essen and visited the coal mine and cokery “Zeche Zollverein”. Our group was divided into three smaller groups. Each group did a guided tour around the coal mine and the cokery.
The “Zeche Zollverein” is a large industrial site in the city of Essen in North Rhine Westphalia. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2001. The first coal was extracted in 1851. The “Zeche Zollverein” was the first underground coal mine of the region and one of the largest collieries of the Ruhr Area. 5355 miners worked in three shafts sites altogether in 1900. The coal mine produced 12.000 net tons of pure hard coal every day. The last coal was mined in 1986.
The big coke ovens in the cokery baked the coal at 1.000 °C to become coke. In winter, there is an ice rink along the ovens.
Between the two guided tours, we had a half-hour break to eat our packed lunch or go to the café.
We learned a lot about energy generated from coal and it was interesting to get an insight into the job of miners.
In the afternoon, we went back to Lemgo and the students stayed with their host families. The day was very nice, the only bad thing was that a Czech girl lost a lot of money, but we all collected money for her the next day.
