My last SCUBA dive was on June 5, 2010 aboard the dive boat PEACE, for World's Ocean Peace Day. I'm a member of the Roddenberry Dive Team, which is part dive club, part fan club and, at our silliest, a wee bit of Team Zissou. Beam me under, Scottie! Going where no mystoriographer has gone before! There is the topos of the boat of the boat or the shore, and the topos of the ocean, a wilderness beneath the surface and the chora is in that interface, as the moment when, loaded down with gear and moving like a overweighted penguin, a diver steps to the edge of the boat and takes a giant stride toward the blue. It is a moment of transformation.
"The Roddenberry Dive Team (RDT) is committed to the promotion of education, exploration and stewardship of our oceans through safe diving activities. As a leader in the science fiction industry, RDT is passionate about incorporating the philanthropic ideals embedded in Star Trek into real world experiences for divers and non-divers around the world. We are committed to carrying on the legacy of vision and optimism that was handed down by Gene Roddenberry. "
Since I first posted this page, I've made about 400 dives at the Aquarium of the Pacific and my most recent dive with the RDT was on June 2, 2013, we went out to the oil rigs off the Long Beach, CA coastline. I hate to admit it, but I was so seasick, I couldn't make the second of the two dives! I was greener than the Grinch!
