I met ocean life artist Doug Wyland at the Long Beach SCUBA show in 2010 and spoke to him and watched in compose a mini-mural of a great white shark. I watched for three hours and recorded his artistic process as he invented a shark where there had only once been white canvas. Wyland has retired from painting his giant "Whaling Walls" murals that made his artwork popular, including the artwork surrounding the Long Beach Convention Center's Exhibit Hall, where this day's painting was taking place. I have many of his works displayed throughout my home of killer whales and dolphins. One print I own has the words 'To Live on the Land We Must Learn from the Sea" from John Denver's song 'Calypso.'
My California license plate is an "environmental" plate which depicts an image of a humpback's whale tail beneath the registration numbers.
The way Wyland paints his rooftop mural is a metaphor for how to create a Mystory.
