2. Afternoon Task: We have narrowed the field to two finalists, and you are one of them! Congratulations. For the final stage of the process, I would like you to observe the following math lesson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7YA0Dd6Hn0 and complete the attached form to evaluate the lesson. The lesson is approximately 30 minutes and you should not take more than 35 minutes to complete the evaluation. Please send your completed observation to me by Wednesday at 5:00 pm. Please also send me three names of individuals who I can call for a reference check.

ASCD READING November 2012 : Teacher Evaluation: What's Fair? What's Effective?

Guiding Questions: (a) Does the district’s organizational structure for staff supervision and evaluation (who evaluates whom) provide sufficient human resources and coverage to ensure effective staff supervision and evaluation? (b) Do district policies, procedures, and local bargaining agreements provide support for the supervision and evaluation of the instructional staff (i.e. teachers, CST, guidance counselors, paraprofessionals)? (c) How has NJAchieve requirements changed the expectations for instructional staff performance in your district/school, and how are they connected to student achievement goals? What are the explicit staff performance responsibilities and accountabilities for student achievement outcomes that are aligned with district educational goals? Are these expectations and accountabilities explicit and clear? How are they communicated to and reinforced with staff? (d) Are supervisory and evaluation practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning? Does your district provide support and time for the process of engaging teachers in instructional dialog for the purpose of improving teaching and student achievement? Is the purpose and expectation of a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) clearly communicated to the staff in light of personnel decisions? Is the instructional staff aware of the purpose of NJSmart? (e) What are district/school policies and procedures for reviewing unit and lesson plans? Are they sufficient for monitoring and improving implementation of the approved curriculum and instructional practices? (f) Is there a structured induction program for new instructional staff? How effective is it? (g) Does the supervision process include mentoring and peer coaching, or other staff support strategies? (h) How are good staff recognized and rewarded? (i) What are the implications of your findings for those responsible for staff supervision and evaluation? (j) How would you improve staff supervision and evaluation in your district/school?
