8. Self-Directed Learning
Our Objectives (For Rationale, Look at the 2016 Horizon Report, K-12 Edition -- pages 32-40)
- Establish a healthy workflow for school leadership teams
- Examine learning communities that stimulate, nurture and support administrators, faculty, and staff in the study and use of technology
- Access and analyze current research how teacher-directed PD is transforming schools
- Gain understanding of how administrators can promote an environment of professional learning and innovation that empowers educators and fosters self-directed professional development.
Our Tasks
1. Discuss how administrators in their districts promote an environment of professional learning and innovation that empowers educators and fosters self-directed professional development. We can also discuss how leaders stay abreast of educational research and emerging trends regarding effective use of technology and encourage evaluation of new technologies for their potential to improve student learning. Define “Digital Badge” and read through articles on how teacher-directed PD is transforming schools.
- Technology Topics: Possible Computer Courses on Code.org; Google's Digital Skills Curriculum;
- Review interesting lectures on TED & RSA websites (as a teacher give students TED-ED videos)
- Use iTunesU (other link) to find online courses and EDUtopia Teacher Development Theme
- Enroll in a MOOC (I always check OpenCulture). Two main providers: Coursera & Edx
- Investigate Google certification for Educators
2. Facilitate and participate in learning communities that stimulate, nurture and support administrators, faculty, and staff in the study and use of technology
- Browse through video PD websites such as Hoonuit, Kyte Learning, Learner.Org, Teacher Channel, Teaching Channel DEEP DIVES, and ASCD
- Discuss the purpose of an EDcamp
- Establish policies for parents and students: The 4 Common Characteristics of Personalized Learning --Personalized learning presents the opportunity to shift education by tailoring the learning experience to an individual student's needs and interests while helping them gain the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed in college and career.
