BW handled the recap using his Pip-Boy (iPhone) to aid in his recall of the events that had occurred.
Leaving the ruins of Eugene now in the control of Coal and ICE, the group returned to Railyard for much needed rest in non-hostile territory. Receiving a warm welcome and a place to stay in the medical car, they met with Yard Boss Bill Terra, Greg Crane boss of the Bulls, and Shane Smith chief engineer. Here they told their tales of adventure in Eugene to eager ears in the Dining Car, as they dined on Brahmin Steak, with Insta-mash potatoes with drippings gravy and a deserts of Fancy Lad Snack-Cakes. After which tea was served and as Kara brought tea to Doc, she nearly spilled the tea, but Doc caught the cup, then Kara gave him a pleading stare and knocked the cup over with a bit of force.
In mopping up the tepid liquid she left her dish towel with Doc as she went to get another. Doc noticed stitched on the towel an ominous warning "Chef is slaver spy."
As Greg and Shane went back to their duties and Bill had more questions, Doc called for a smoke break before desert was to be served. The group found this odd as Doc did not smoke, still everyone went outside and Doc revealed Kara's note. Bill was surprised and not certain but was willing to let the Gotham Knights have a bit of leeway in their investigation and handling the situation.
After dessert, the group decided to split up, Doc and Wayne staying here and training the slaves and using the fact the Chef was a spy and using him to send disinformation (a great suggestion by ACE) to the slavers. The rest would travel to Corvallis and deliver the relays to Jim at the Bombs Away Cafe and get some supplies. The next morning they found out the mysterious and much sought after gold dealer Piper was going to be in town for Freedom day along with other Traders such as Handy Mandy, Diecast and even the hunky Red Hawk.
After the traditional wake up from Corey Vega he had some news
“Now for some new News that does not involve the Gotham Knights….oh wait, I’m mistaken. Today we’ve got a story of lovers tossed from their kingdom only to conquer it later thanks to much help from those Gotham Knights. The princess in this story is almost over 200 years old and the prince, well he is almost as much machine as man. And the King, well he was a computer on buffout and jet if the rumors are to be believed. In the end the King of Eugene, the Puppeteer of power, the Eternal Watching Eye, the Shadowman is no more, and Coal and Ice rule upon high! The King, is dead long live the king! Long live the new powers of Eugene, Huzzah! Now we can all attend jousts and feasts as soon as this wasteland is brought up from the double dark ages to the medieval times. Now back to the music.”
Bill did uphold his end of the bargain and got most of the slaves 4 hours each day to train with Doc and Wayne, this went off without a hitch until the end of the day when it was discovered that Kara never made any of the training sessions as noted by her beau James.
Meanwhile the 8 hour trek to Corvallis was tame with the exception of a rad-scropion attack that did nothing but give some much needed target practice and the meeting of the handsome Red Hawk who verified that Piper was definitely coming to Railyard along with his bodyguard, the well known Mr. Fourtyfour's who were in Corvallis the last few days, but appear to have left yesterday.
That afternoon they found their dorm manager very freaked to see them and locked himself in his room. Their apartment was trashed, their issues of Guns and Bullets destroyed, their outfits slashed, their food destroyed, a six-pack of nuka-cola consumed, and two .44 Magnum bullets upon their dining table with the names etched on the lead BW and Grim. This caused ACE, Grim, and BW to split up to figure out what was going on. ACE determined that Mr. 44 had intimidated Matt, their dorm manager, to let him into their room. ACE also visited the cafeteria to get validation of Matt’s information. Meanwhile Grim and BW planned the murder of Mr. 44 for his trespass before ACE and Grim went to the labs to meet with Dr. Preacher and deliver his gifts. After they left, BW was summoned to the Dean’s office to discuss a problem.
BW met with the Dean was explained to him that Mr. 44 is now the primary suspect in a case of sabotage, and that Tesla had found some crucial information about Dr. Preston's work. That Preston was focusing his efforts on a regional-stationary satellite somewhere above the Oregon area, whether it is US or Chinese is not known and what its purpose is, is also unknown. Dean Preston did agree with BW to grant him permission to request some plastique explosives from the armory - 2 charges only.
Elsewhere, ACE and Grim were intercepted upon the stairs by the slightly silly and slightly dashing image of Professor Leonard O'Dee, who was most excited to share with ACE that they had a successful test of the vertibird of a 10 second flight before "something went amiss." Meanwhile Grim had a well described encounter with Dr. Preacher, excited to find that the two Mr. Handy's had recently re-programmed voices - one in a more deep "creepy bulter" voice and the other that of the classical squeaky "mad scientist assistant" voice. There they talked and shared their moments, Grim learned that Mr. 44 had come and threatened Dr. Preacher with his death after he killed her, but he was clearly unimpressed. She delivered her gifts of a portable lab kit and the Radioactive heart of the Glowing One from the Med Tek labs.
Meanwhile, ACE rejoined BW as he was leaving the labs, where BW passed the paper work to ACE and proceeded to meet with the brusque keeper of the Armory. Here BW finally met the woman of his dream Marge, keeper of the Corvallis Armory, she was crass, violent, and shared many of the same view points of BW on torture and violence being a valid means of getting information, compared to the slick ways of Wayne. It was here that he noticed her huge stack of Guns and Bullets magazines and many of the ROTC manuals secured in the armory that she was busy reading and sense he had found his soul-mate. In the end, BW got his plastique and .5 klick remote detonators (even if they were not on the requisition), and wondered why his friend had never told him about her.
ACE meanwhile dashed to the Bombs Away Cafe to deliver the Boosters to Jim, when she entered she got a clearly plastic friendly reaction from Jake and Mike Fleer. A moment later Jim appeared gave her a brief hug and whispered "He is watching" in her ear. Jim and ACE then retreated to Jim's layer where he explained that Mr. 44 was still in town and had heard they were coming and wanted a duel with Grim in the morning at the dump. She traded the 8 boosters for 1 nuka-cola and 50 caps each (vs. the previously agreed price of 100 caps each).
Grim and BW joined ACE at the Bombs Away Cafe where they tried Jake's latest lightly hoppy beer with a hint of lemon and called it his gayest beer yet. He explained it was mostly for the wives of the ranchers who wanted something lighter than the Gotham Dark Knight Stout, but would call it Amanda's Twist since it was clearly not to their liking. Joining ACE and Jim downstairs they got the latest on Mr. 44 and his duel, they also learned he had some special outfit that allows him to appear out of no-where, a Chinese Dragoon's stealth-suit. Jim revealed the location of Vault 67 and that there is a ghoul there named Jay Young, who had a similar uniform on and a large stock of Chinese assault rifles. During his time there Jim learned Jay was once a Chinese sub commander and many of the ghouls there were also survivors from this same submarine. Jim speculates that Mr. 44 was able to obtain a suit from Jay or some other source.
That night Doc stealthed across the wastelands to Vault 33 where, en-route he observed slavers in action messing around in Veneta, digging ditches and moving debris around. He also noticed that one guys was hauling a radio around. Deciding not the mess with them, he moved on to vault 33 where it was made clear the vault needed to enter lock down mode for a while after he left. He radioed up to the Bombs Away Cafe and talked with ACE and Jim and communicated their need for explosives and got the situation up there before sneaking back.
Meanwhile back in Railyard, Wayne and Doc searched for Kara and found her stuffed in the space beneath the Dining car bound, gagged and a quite the shiner. Doc took her to hide out with them in the medical wing while Wayne ran interference.
Back in Corvallis, Grim went off to meet with Thanatos, Mr. 44's real name for a duel. After arriving to the scene, Thanatos appeared out of no-where to challenge Grim. Staring across the debris of two different era's with hard stares and simple taunts they reached for their guns with blazing speed, and as bullets were traded with plasma bolts, in the end all that was left of Thanatos was a pile of green goo (Grim did 34 points of damage with one shot of her weapon) with two pearl-handled .44 magnums and a bruised Grim (his best damage was 9).
From here, ACE gave Corey the scoop of the day and shortly thereafter the following News Story reached the world
"Ladies and Gentlemen, today in the blasted wasteland, two great reapers of death met over the debris and decay of the past and present. Long standing enforcer of fear and terror against a new comer to the game of death and dismemberment. Today Bolts of lead and plasma were to settle the score and rumors of who was best. In the end, Grim of the Gotham Knights did lay Thanatos low and while certainly pissed off a bunch of folks did put her mark on the Willamette valley wastelands, long live the Darkest of the Gotham Knights, the Dark Knight Grim."
Meanwhile Grim returned to Dr. Preacher with pearl-handled guns in hand and he agreed to engrave skulls upon their handles and stain the metal black. After which a "Rock Me Sexy Jesus/Boot scene" was enacted.
From here the group reconvened back in Railyard and hashed out a devious plan. First that night they travelled to the Dam for Fern Ridge Lake and secretly planted the plastique explosives in the Dam. Then the next day spoke openly about how that would be nightly rest spot on the route they would take the freed slaves home. The next night they snuck out to the Dam and sure enough a large group of slaves were hard at work digging trenches before resting for the evening. The group then stealthed in and stunned/rendered unconscious the sentries and rescued the slaves before blowing the dam and killing all the slavers inside.
Questioning these slavers they found out that they were only "whips" the lowest ranking slavers and were from a camp not far from Junktown. "Chains" were higher ranking and kept to themselves in a location unknown. There were a couple "Chains" with this group, but were now very dead. Of the slaves present, none were Vault 33 survivors but rather a mix of tribals and ranchers. Wayne ran intel and counter-intel and learned that this group came from all over the region and were held in the slaver pens in the camp near Junkyard as that is where there is most brisk trade in Slaves occurs.
Taking the surviving slaves back to Vault 33 where they cleaned them up and added them to the army, they found a Slaver force had already been here. Their memorial, cattle pens, and fox holes had been destroyed; only a grave marker for Harold Davis remained, which earned a bunch of odd commentary.
The next day the training went on, but that evening the Gotham Knights visited vengence on the Chef and kidnapped Piper Mills. BW and Grim handled the former with much glee and horrific anticipation. Whereas Doc, Wayne and ACE took Piper all the way back to Vault 33. There Piper was questioned for an extended period of time under the vengeful eye and hand of BW.
Piper revealed that he obtained his gold from a gold mine near the slaver stronghold at Mill City. They learned who the contact was in Railyard - Chef Tim, the contact in Corvallis was Amanda, but he's been trying to turn Jake the new bartender but nothing definite yet. There was no spy in Thorn as they are a very closed community. In Junktown they have a couple spies including one prostitute, Sally Forth, and one of the guards, Rickey. They learned who all the L.T.'s are in Mill City: Dan Marsh (Black Marsh) - leads the Chains of Pain, also known as the regional slavers. Mad Meg (in charge of defense and direct raids), Edgar(stealth abductions and sniper), Gorgan Steele (in charge of mines and mills), Quick Tess (runs the prison section), Harold Davis (runs the bar and brothels), and himself Piper Mills (Intelligence, looking for new tribes to raid). That night Doc sent Corey Vega an announcement he wanted read around 1pm.
The next day was Freedom Day. All the preparations in town included a great pancake feast, festive clothing, and good music. To which, before the declarations of stay or go by the slaves, Doc gave a rousing speech before executing the slavers they captured at the dam. Then one by one the slaves declared their choice of stay or go with Kara and James being last where they declared their freedom together, and right after that he proposed to her. She said yes.
Then right one cue, Corey Vegas read out Doc's proclamation of war against the slavers, ending with the stirring words - "Death is the price you pay for dealing in your brother’s flesh."
From which, with great pomp and circumstance, Bill Terra signed the free-town pact with the Gotham Knights and their city of Gotham.
Then in a great march, those who had long left Vault 33 so long ago returned home to great rejoicing. James immediately began work on repairing the master generator, but the work of the Gotham Knights is not over yet. For tomorrow they plan their visit to Mill City.
