A pioneer of plein-air impressionism in Australia, he became known after his death, as 'The Father of Australian landscape painting'. With Frederick McCubbin and Louis Abrahams he founded the first of the artists' camps at Box Hill, from which would develop the Heidelberg School. During his lifetime Roberts received no official honours but his work lived on and as the legend of his life and career grew, his work began to appreciate in value. He is now one of the best known artists of the Heidelberg school.
