The Half Portrait. This is an exercise that requires you to complete a portrait from half a portrait. You glue either the left or right side of a printed portrait image onto a sheet of A3 paper and use your shading pencils to complete the picture. You will concentrate on the shading as well as the proportions. If you are right handed you will find it easier if you glue the left side of the picture down, and vice-versa if you are left handed.
You can use the sheet you are copying from to make sure you have all the features in the right place and the right proportions (don't trace directly). The other important thing to do is make sure you have the shading as close to the original as possible. Use the edge of the 4B or 6B pencil to shade and identify:
The darkest areas
The lightest shaded areas
The in-between or medium shaded areas.
