In November 2024 ...
With our Parish Council bid to buy North Marsh unsuccessful, and amid local uncertainty about what might happen next, I published two images here: an OS map showing the North Marsh boundary (black) and the route of FP9 public footpath (purple) through it; and a satellite image showing the GPS-tracked routes (red) being used, with a photo carousel of Google Earth views going back as far as 2000.
I knew there was a (very) outside chance that our evidence of the continuous use, such as witness statements, maps, or historical documents could lead to the paths being permanently available and I tested village opinion via our Muskham Messenger mail group, but there was very little response to the possibility👎.
That's all water under the bridge now, we've moved on.
By April 2025 ...
Our Parish Council's second bid to purchase North Marsh was unsuccessful and the new owner had turned out to be a local man.
Despite some initial concern and polarised debate, most of the village now appears content to trust the goodwill promised by the new landowner on traffic, fishing and access - and to welcome the undeniable improvements already made to the Public Footpath 9 along the side of The Trent.
Personally, after an informative 2-hour walkabout with the owner prior to the April PC meeting, I wrote on our local mail group that "I found the visit really interesting, quite inspiring in fact, and wish you well going forward. I saw nothing in the developments to criticise, and lots to admire."
I'll be adding items to the photo carousel here as things develop.
