Museum Visit: Contemporary Wearable Art and Design

Museum of Art and Design (MAD)
Theme: The Evolution of the Self-Portrait: Expressing Culture and Identity through Contemporary Wearable Art
Learning Objectives
Expose student artists to actual artwork that consists of a variety of mediums and found objects that form a 3-dimensional wearable artwork
Provoke critical thinking to better understand the many materials used by all the artists in the show.
Observe and form connections between art mediums, form, identity and culture
Compare and Contrast 3 of 5 artists focused on exhibition specific artists: Nick Cave, Sanford Biggers, Maria Fernando Cardoso, Hena Lee, and Romina Fuentes.
Understand both skill and self-expression through subject matter
Demonstrate the process of working 3-dimensionally

Materials

Procedure/Activities
-Arrive for 45-minute tour that introduces students to the various works in the galleries
-Hand out questionnaire for students (see attached)
-Encourage students to take notes and sketch various artworks that correlate with their notes.
-Tour guide will begin with the exhibition Dead or Alive and will introduce many artists working in various 3-D mediums.
-Students will have time to view the interactive touch screen where artists individually talk about their artwork.
-Visit the artist’s studios at the Museum
-Self-guided tour will then be at Think Again New Latin American Jewelry Exhibition
-Finish filling out questionnaire and finish any sketches
-Collect questionnaires for next class
-Advise students to bring in materials that represent their identity for next class

FORMATIVE:
Students fill out questionnaire and compare and contrast the artwork in the galleries
Sketches and notes are taken to record their observations
Questions are asked during and after tour

Mixed-Media/non-traditional art materials
11th grade
BIG IDEA: Artists analyze their culture while simultaneously analyzing how this effects their own identity.
Aim: To create a necklace that consists of non-traditional art materials that relates to students own identity
Rationale: Students like to make work that inspires them. They are interested in designing and creating artwork that represents themselves while learning about other cultures, history and new art mediums
Behavioral Objectives
-Create a 3-dimensional wearable piece of artwork that consists of a specific medium(s)
-Make connection between materials and subject matter
-Learn how to build using other materials creatively
-Explore identity through materials
-Learn about other artists and their own identities
-Form ideas by becoming influenced by other artists
-Develop self-confidence by learning how to problem solve through expressing oneself in a 3-dimensional manner
-Provoke critical thinking through collaborative group work.

Glue, needles, tape, wire, various objects and materials brought in by student

Motivation
-Handout Museum Questionnaires done by students
-Discuss comparisons students formed between artists
What was different between the work in Dead or Alive and the artwork in Think Again?
What were the similarities?
Which artwork did you compare and why?
Give me an example of how two artist utilized identity?
What was beautiful about some of the work?
What was grotesque?
How did these artists identify with their culture?
Procedure/Activities
-Demonstrate how to sew a needle and thread through fabric
-Demonstrate how to bend and shape wire
-Demonstrate how to plug in and use a hot glue gun
-Students will get into groups of 3 or 4
-They will discuss the materials they brought in and how this represents them
-They will discuss how they will create a necklace and begin sketching ideas
-Students will begin to work on their 3-dimensional necklace using the necessary tools,materials available and procedures demonstrated
