8.5”x11” construction paper, paper scraps, scissors, glue stick, and fabric scraps
Motivation
Show images of Alex Katz, Japanese prints and Lucien Freud of faces and portraiture
What are the eyes, eyebrows and mouth doing?
How do you know this?
What are these parts of the face shaped like?
What kind of feelings are they showing?
What facial expressions are they making?
What does facial expressions mean?
Presentation of Content
Teacher will ask questions:
What happens when I make a sad face?
What happens when I make a happy face?
What if you are confused, what happens to you face?
What about if you are nervous?
Feel your face, what shape are your eyes and mouth?
What happens to my face when I looked scared?
What is collage?
Teacher will demonstrate:
How to hold scissors
How to cut, tear, bend, crinkle, fray etc., the paper to create texture and shape
How to cut and fold fabric to create shape and texture
How to glue the main paper and then stick the shapes down
How to glue layer other shapes and textures to create a specific facial expression of your superhero -
Assessment and Evaluation
Teacher will:
Guide and help students decide what color and form they want their head to be
Walk around room holding examples of work that shows use of shape and facial features
Correct any misuse of glue
Hold up examples of various ways students created texture through manipulation of paper
Make certain all directions are being followed
Possible Extensions
Students will write about their superhero and the collages along with the statement will be hung up
