Summary: Sixth grade students studied the Byzantine empire in depth. In Art we examined byzantine icons from the MET collection and mosaics from 600-800 A.D. We learned about icons are and the effects of iconoclasm on a civilization. We also looked at how byzantine art is reflected in contemporary and modern art through the works of Andy Warhol, Seurat and Chuck Close. Students were asked to create a mosaic of a meaningful object they cherish.
