Project Description
Students eill create a cityscape influenced by the artist Jacob Lawrence using the stamp method
Big Idea
Artists observe and create art about the surrounding environment andheighborhoods in which they live

Learning Experiences (Sessions)
1. A book will be read about Jacob Lawrence and the paitings he created of the city and city life. What shapes make up the buildings?
What are the deatils in teh buildings? What kinds of lines are evident or that you observe? What do the buildings outside look like? Students begin to sketch a cityscape with pencil.

2. Give students photographs of buildings as references to sketch and understand details. What are details? Where do you see them? What kind of lines can we make to create these details?

3. Start Final: Paint background with blue and white paint and use brushstrokes to create various lines and shapes to cover whole paper.

4. Begin stamping cityscape. Demonstrate how to use part of the cardboard stamp using black paint. Review line, shape, color and texture elements using stamp.

5. SEcond Stamping cityscape. With second color demonstrate overlapping. Have students begin their second color printmaking

6. Stamp details. Review what details are. Use a third color such as yellow to create windows, doors, balconies etc.

7. Gallery talk, critique. Students discuss their cityscape neighborhoods and title their prints.
