8.5”x11” construction papers, scraps, feathers, glue, and scissors
Motivation
Show examples of masks
What kind of shapes do you see?
How are the shapes similar and different?
What colors are used in each of the masks?
How are the colors different in each of the masks?
How are they similiar?
Presentation of Content
Teacher will demonstrate:
How to fold paper in half
Draw a shape of the mask
Cut on the line and unfold paper to reveal full symmetrical mask
How to cut, fold and glue paper to create 3-dimensional images that pop from paper
Assessment and Evaluation
Teacher will:
Walk around room holding up examples and pointing out details
Hold up work and to show hoe student was influenced by examples of South Pacific masks
Walk around room holding examples of work that shows use of symmetry
Correct any misuse of glue
Make certain all directions are being followed
Possible Extensions
Introduce other forms of costume such as jewelry that cultures use as for rituals and have students create jewelry
