Create a pastel drawing within a square plain
Observe and identify present environment outside from inside the classroom
Draw and understand negative and positive space
Learn to and apply composition and layer colors using pastels
Review primary colors and introduce mixing pastels to create secondary colors

8.5”x11” construction paper, pastels, red, blue, yellow pastels classroom window with nature accessible
Motivation
Hold up a small tree branch with leaves
What is the positive space here?
What would be considered the negative space?
What shapes does the positive space (tree branch etc.) make?
What do you see outside?
What colors are there?
Where is the negative space?
Where is the positive space?
Presentation of Content
Teacher will explain:
How can you get various colors using only red, blue and yellow?
Take paper and pastels demonstrate and explain:
Mix red with blue
What color will I get?
Mix blue with yellow
What color will be I create?
Mix yellow and red
Now what color will be created?
What happens when I mix all 3 colors?
Choose a section of the view outside the window
Within the picture plain begin to draw the negative space to create your positive image and use only 3 colors to create other colors.
Assessment and Evaluation
Teacher will:
Walk around room holding up examples and pointing out various colors
Hold up work and point out unique compositions
Walk around room holding examples of work that shows use of negative and positive space well
Make certain all directions are being followed
