Summary: Students compared and contrasted Reformation Art in the Netherlands to Counter-Reformation Art in Italy. We are currently studying Baroque artists such as Vermeer, Caravaggio and Rembrandt. We looked at the formal aspects of the paintings such as color, space, tone and movement along with the content or theme of the paintings. Light plays a significant role in Baroque paintings, setting a mood and emotion through chiaroscuro affects. Students applied charcoal techniques such as smudging and value to create their self-portrait inspired by Baroque Artists such as Vermeer, Caravaggio and Rembrandt.
