A 2014 update added these comments from Dave.

TPC - Maryland, GT Performance - Maryland, and RRTracing - Dulles are all popular with the DE crowd

The shops below participate with the region on tech inspections for the DEs and have good reputations:

Sportscar Shop - Sterling
IMA Motorsport - Chantilly
InterSport - McLean
Autobahn - Fairfax
Chapman Auto Werks - Sterling
Auto Sportsystems Group - Fairfax

A couple of the guys from Intersport participate in DE and a lot of the folks go there.

At Speed is still around as is SSI in Joppa, MD with no negative comments.

In 2018 someone recommended
TAG Motorwerks in Gaithersburg (next to the airpark)

HBL aka Porsche of Tysons Corner

Mine has been serviced there several times in 2005-6 with good results. They only charged me once for the three times it took to get the airbag warning light but that was in large part due to the changing Porsche instructions and TSBs changing. I did feel I was treated fairly. I did wait on the service and even snuck around back to talk to the tech doing the actual work.

First Choice

Ray Moxley and Pete Pirhalla are managers there. When I had a bad accident in my first Boxster, I asked both at PPBB and on the local Porsche board and got the same answer, go to First Choice. Good to work with, have proper Porsche frame measurement jigs, etc. They do a lot of work for the dealers in high end German cars. Fun to just walk around the impoundment yard. Ultimately they didn't do the work on my car because it was totaled but I saw enough of their work and work habits to trust them. They won't be the fastest. They won't be the cheapest. But you want it done right....go there.

Tysons Corner Colision Center aka HBL aka Porsche of Tysons Corner

Mine was not the most pleasant experience in terms of communications. Felt I had to manage the process. I got hit in the rear and they did a nice job on rebuilding the bumper and bumper support structures. Excellent paint match. While the car was there for several weeks I wanted them to do my front bumper too, buff out some scratches, fill in some scratches, and deliver it to the repair shop for one item. Instead of that happening seamlessly, I had to go there and move it between body, repair and detailing shops myself.  I ended up bringing it back 3 times for incomplete work (in the paid for by me add-on work, not for work that was done badly).

Wheel Refurbishment

Ye Olde Wheel Shop
6363 Washington Blvd.
Elkridge, MD 21075

(800) 526-8260, (410) 796-8400

Near BWI airport.

I used them once to refinish a curb- rash'ed 17" turbo-twist painted wheel.  Absolutely couldn't tell it wasn't brand new when I got it back. Perfect paint match.

Wandered the shop enough to know they do lots of very expensive wheels for lots of very high end cars (local pro-athlete owned, $4k per wheel stuff), not just Porsche. They came recommended by local Porsche owners.

They will remove the tire marking it's position in relation to the rim. Then do the work, then remount the tire so the whole process doesn't disturb the balance. There is an extra charge for the R&R of the tire so the cheapest way is to take in the bare rim. But then you risk the rim being damaged by the subsequent mounting of the tire by someone else. Best let them do the whole job so you get it back in perfect condition.
