I have to say that I really enjoy reading other game player's blogs about games that I am playing. What I see is a completely different reaction than mine. So, my take on this is that everyone internalizes and apparently externalizes their reactions differently. The last few days I've spent more time on Hay Day and Portal. I was thrilled to see Portal mentioned very briefly in the Gee book. I was also very interested in Gee's discussion of learning in video games and what exactly is being learned. Not just learning vocabulary but environmental cues and symbols. I was discussing this in my last blog. Of course, Gee goes into much more detail and I am happy to see how he relates this learning to be a good scientist.
Hay Day: I will be a good patient farmer and plant my crops and reap my crops and plant my crops and build a bigger barn and reap more crops and feed my animals and reach new levels. I will not pay out of pocket! My routine with this game is: Turn it on in the morning and do my chores for about 10 minutes...Turn it on at lunch and do my chores for about 10 minutes. Turn it on before bed and do my chores for about 10 minutes. That's it. I've managed to get to level 16 and I am just waiting to unlock some new things in the next level. If I could just get to the level where I have access to that diamond mine! I've got a way to go. This farm is quite a business. I've figured out how to generate good income and make things from my products and what to do when I run out of seed. I figured out that I was using too many of the crops for products and didn't have enough seed for replanting. Then I had to find the seed I needed somehow. I always find a way. Even in this little iPhone game I find myself needing other players to buy my goods or to sell them to me.
Portal: I have discovered that sometimes what I really need is a break and then I get it! I am learning about the cool things I have ahead of me when I read others blogs on the game. Since Steam has a place where people blog about the game and share pictures of where they are in the game. The rooms look very different and more interesting so once again I have been intrigued into playing more. It is taking longer to solve the puzzles. I am referring to past experiences to help me solve each new puzzle. What I really need are two sets of portal devices but I have only been given the one devise. I was hoping to use the "Strafe" feature I saw on keyboard editing page but I can't seem to get it to work.
