Simply said, these games are HARD! In context with my class objective about how do I learn from these games, I often feel like I am not learning I am just failing....Then, after I stick with it for a while, perhaps trying again after being ever so frustrated, I figure out what the game is trying to "tell" me in absolutely no words.
Portal: Each new test/level is more complex and is taking me longer to figure out the solution. I am learning what different features of the rooms do and can't do. Today I learned about these force fields that block off the portals and cause them to close in other rooms. So, after much trial and retrial, in fact at one time I tried destroying the camera in the room and the computer came on and told me to not destroy their equipment. Each room is more complex and my brain is working hard and I feel tense! I must admit that every time I successfully complete a level I am very happy and could try another one.
Monaco: Learning about what each burglar option can bring to the caper. I have tried three different characters and I need to try the rest. The game is helping you be successful by giving arrows to point you in the right direction to the targeted prize and it gave a BIG hint to me at one point to tell me how to get out and WIN that level. Yay! I was happy about that. Perhaps the more I die off the more used to it I will get. If I die, and still have lives left I can get to the point where I left off and continue with success. I do like that winning feeling! Is this the point?
Hay Day: OK, this game is EASY. Of course, this game, while fun, is not the epic win type of game. I relax playing it and to me that is awesome. I also learn as we go but dying or just having to sit and work it out over and over, building frustration, hasn't really been a part of this game. I have always found or been given what I need to make my way around the obstacle I faced. There are no perilous exploits in this game. I get excited when I complete a level but the feeling is way different than in my other two games.
Portal and Monaco both give me a feeling of a bigger win but they frustrate me more.
