A Democratic state representative denied Friday that he had ever abused his ex-wife, and he blasted a Republican mailer that re-raised allegations in campaign literature sent this week to voters in his district.

Littleton police in 2015 investigated the allegations against Rep. David Ortiz and did not find enough evidence to arrest or charge him. The mailer containing the claims, paid for by the Restore Colorado Leadership Fund, shows images of Ortiz alongside photos of bruises on what appear to be a woman’s arm. It quotes from the 2015 police report detailing the abuse allegations against Ortiz and includes a text message Ortiz sent to his ex-wife.

A search of a Colorado Bureau of Investigations database shows Ortiz, an incumbent representative locked in a tight re-election race, has never been arrested or charged in the state. Police here are required to arrest someone if there’s probable cause to believe they committed domestic violence.

In a statement posted to Facebook late Friday afternoon, Ortiz denied the allegations and called the mailer “a disgusting, dishonest attack ad from a dark money GOP smear group … trying to impugn my character by dragging up an allegation that I acted abusively toward my ex-wife after we broke up.”

Ortiz declined to comment beyond his statement Friday night.

He seemed to acknowledge the text message referenced in the mailer was accurate. He wrote that at the time of the alleged incident, he was “undergoing intensive rehabilitation” resulting from his injuries while serving in the Army and that he was “not proud of the things I wrote in text messages during that time.”...

On Feb. 27, 2015, a Littleton Police officer called Ortiz’s ex-wife, who said she wanted to report that she had been beaten. She and Ortiz had divorced several years before, and she had come and stayed with him in Littleton at his invitation.

She told police that Ortiz had gotten mad at her after she had too much to drink near the end of her visit and that he had then allegedly grabbed her, “hit her in the hip, and the leg,” according to the report.

She said that the next day, Ortiz allegedly grabbed, restrained and hit her again. He then apologized, according to the report, before allegedly driving her “to the middle of the ghetto” and leaving her there. She said she called a friend, who picked her up....

Ortiz’s ex-wife told police that Ortiz had previously called her various names and been physically abusive.

She sent copies of several text messages and images of bruises to police;...

Police initially charged Daniel Martin with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct, but the charges were upgraded to second-degree assault and second-degree strangulation. Kimberly Martin was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.  Daniel Martin, warden of the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, R.I., and a former warden at Connecticut prisons for both male and female inmates, was arrested again in Killingly on Aug. 24 on charges of violating a protective order and criminal possession of a handgun. The warrant for that arrest says Kimberly Martin called police after learning of an Instagram post that showed Daniel Martin with a friend at a firing range on Aug. 14, even though the court order issued after his Aug. 10 arrest prohibited her husband from having guns.

Kimberly Martin, 52, told police she feared for her life because her husband "believes he is really powerful because he is a warden at a correctional facility," the arrest warrant affidavit stated.  Confronted about firing guns at the range, Daniel Martin acknowledged "poor judgment," police said, but also questioned language in the protective order that banned him from "possessing" or "receiving" a firearm. The guns he used belonged to a friend and Martin said he did not intend to violate the order, the warrant stated....

BROOMFIELD, Colo. — A now-former Denver Sheriff Department deputy pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge related to a domestic-violence incident this year in Broomfield.  Christopher Perez resigned from the Sheriff Department in April while he was under investigation for the Feb. 18 assault. On Thursday, Perez pleaded guilty to second-degree assault - attempted strangulation and was granted a deferred sentence.  He'll serve 18 months of supervised probation and will avoid jail time as long as he completes the conditions of that probation.  According to an arrest affidavit from the Broomfield Police Department (BPD), the victim said that Perez put both of his hands around a woman's neck and choked her to the point that she thought she was going to die.....

 A fugitive Madison attorney who's charged with three violent felonies told 27 News he disputes accusations he attacked a roommate after being confronted with domestic violence claims.  "That's absolutely false," attorney Jair Alvarez, 34, told 27 News...The complaint says the roommate maintained Alvarez had been physically abusive to the woman in the past.  The complaint says Alvarez responded with hostility against the roommate, arming himself with a gun and threatening the roommate. The complaint states the roommate tried to defend himself with a baseball bat but dropped it when he saw Alvarez begin to draw his firearm. Court records say Alvarez then used the bat to hit the roommate. The complaint says the roommate had injuries consistent with being hit by a bat....Alvarez says his roommate was the aggressor with the baseball bat.  "Which actually (he) then took the baseball bat and destroyed everything in my house," Alvarez said.  Alvarez did not say what prompted the roommate's ire. Alvarez denied any abuse against his girlfriend.  Before this case, Alvarez had no criminal history. State courts records show he's represented several dozen criminal defendants as an attorney. In 2018, a Dane County judge granted a woman a restraining order against Alvarez's current accuser after the woman said the man was abusive and threatened to kill her. Last year, the publication Madison365 identified Alvarez as one of the 46 most prominent Latino leaders in the state....

The New Hampshire Supreme Court has previously granted former state Sen. Jeff Woodburn a new trial on two domestic violence related convictions and soon will consider whether to do the same on two more.

In August 2018, the Attorney General’s Office said Woodburn, 58, who represented District 1 in the NH Senate for six years and at one point had been the Democratic minority leader in that body, had committed nine offenses, all of which were misdemeanors, against his partner between Aug. 10, 2017, and June 9, 2018.

A Coos County jury in 2021 found Woodburn not guilty on five of the charges but guilty on two counts of criminal mischief and on a count each of domestic violence, simple assault/bodily injury and of simple assault, physical contact/bodily injury.

After the trial, Woodburn, who had previously also served in the NH House of Representatives, appealed his conviction on the assault charges to the state Supreme Court, which agreed that trial judge Peter Bornstein erred in not allowing Woodburn to argue self defense....
