Sisters of the Gion is a film directed by MIZOGUCHI Kenji. It shows the lives of two sisters who are geisha in the Gion district. Umekichi, the elder sister, is very traditional and loyal to her patron. Omocha, the younger sister, does not agree with Umekichi's views on a patron-geisha relationship, and spends most of the movie trying to manipulate the men in their lives in order to improve living conditions for her and her sister. Very much a metaphor for traditional versus contemporary and East versus West, the film ends with Omocha getting into an accident and both sisters being abandoned by any man who would be willing to support them.
