Welcome!
This site was created as a final project for the Winter 2014 offering of Stanford's JapanGen157: "How to Find Modern Japan: A Gateway Course". The class was taught by Professor Indra Levy, of the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department. My goal in creating this site was to illustrate the geographic and cultural diversity represented by the works and people we studied. Here, you'll find:A map of places relevant to the works we've studied.
A map of places relevant to the people we've studied.
Articles that give an overview of each of these works/people.
Brief analysis of some regional representations.
Brief analysis of central course themes.
Throughout these pages, I've kept with the course notation of writing last names in capital letters. (e.g. ITAMI Juzo) In the list of works, I associate each film/story with the time period in which it is set. "Prewar" refers to the period before WWII. "Contemporary" refers to, approximately, the past 35 years. "Postwar/Reconstruction" refers to the recovery after WWII and 3.11 (Fukushima Incident). Images used on this site that are not my own are listed on the "Image Sources" page, which includes links to the original sources.
I hope you enjoy exploring this site and learning more about modern Japan!
