Manchester Waves
By Jeff Mason
Scientists are proving the therapeutic value of music. HYPERLINK "http://Cracked.com/"Cracked.com has an article titled 7 Insane Ways Music Affects The Body (According To Science.) According to the article, music can repair brain damage and help a person quit an addiction. Music is being used in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s. It is believed that music can boost the immune system and prevent seizures. Listening to piano music can increase spatial reasoning. I find this very inspirational as I approach my sixty-fourth birthday! I have three weeks left to sing When I’m 64 and then I’ll have to lie.
I’ve thought a lot about how music affected me when I was young. It seemed to be a happy period in my life and when I hear it now, it still puts a smile on my face.
Earlier this year, two musicians from my youth passed away. I approached the writing of this article with some hesitation because of my sadness about their deaths. I was wrong to be hesitant, because the music of Davy Jones and Robin Gibb will endure and make people sing and dance forever.
In the early 1960s, The Beatles were the vanguard of many talented groups and musicians from the city of Liverpool; in the north of England. The musical wave that swept across the Atlantic Ocean was called Mersey Beat, so-called because the city of Liverpool stands on the banks of the River Mersey. The city of Manchester, 34 miles away, produced some good groups who rode to fame on the Mersey Beat. Amongst those bands were The Hollies and Freddie and the Dreamers.
Later, in that decade, another band emerged from Manchester. That band was a trio of brothers called The Bee Gees. Their songwriting skills and achievements have been compared to Lennon and McCartney. Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb were blessed with sweet voices and produced soaring harmonies and vocals. The band had two lives. The first was in the mid 1960s with folksier songs like Massachusetts and New York Mining Disaster 1941. They continued to have hits until 1970 when the group disbanded. After re-forming, they hit it big with the rhythm and blues favored Jive Talking in 1975. Sparking a revival, the band became a worldwide phenomenon scoring three No. 1 hits with How Deep Is Your Love, Staying Alive and Night Fever. They would continue to write songs for other artists like Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton with Islands in The Stream, for Barbra Streisand with Woman In Love and Dionne Warwick with Heartbreaker.
Davy Jones came from Manchester and like the Gibb brothers was a child star; appearing in a famous British soap opera called Coronation Street. He played the Artful Dodger In the Broadway production of Oliver. Davy appeared in that role in an episode of The Ed Sullivan Show. It was the episode that featured The Beatles, and Davy was inspired by them.
In 1966, Davy became a member of The Monkees, the band formed for a television show of the same name. It was a comedy show inspired by The Beatle’s first movie A Hard Day’s Night. The show’s musical producer was Don Kirshner. He brought in writers from The Brill Building song writing factory in New York. The most notable of these professional songsmiths were Neil Diamond and the songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. The first single for the band was Last Train To Clarksville. It was penned by Boyce/Hart and went to No.1 in 1966. The group followed up with Neil Diamond’s I’m A Believer which went to No. 1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 in December of 1966. Although the television show only lasted until 1968, the musical group The Monkees continued to perform.
My most enjoyable moments in researching this article were looking at the old black and white clips of the Bee Gees on Australian television. Their family emigrated to Australia in the early 1960s and the boys became national television stars there.
These reflections remind me that it is all about the music! It makes you smile, and that’s good for you. See you next month.
