I am happy to report that my eye surgeries were successful. While my main reason for the procedures was to fix my cataracts, I also had the astigmatism in my eyes corrected. It's been a long year when I was unable to drive at night. Anyone who knows me well, will be aware that I am a night owl. It feels like a new freedom. There is an old Otis Redding track with the line “you don’t miss your water ’til your well runs out.”

Another lesson in my life journey. I have certainly come to appreciate my eyesight.
This next part of my article is a leftover from last month. I love the writing and playing of Nashville based singer Lera Lynn. She has a new album out this summer titled “Something More Than Love.” She has always been an introspective writer which for me has always been part of the draw. This is an even more pensive album as she reflects on life changes. These are the kind of songs that creep up on you and I mean that in a good way. Here is an article about the album.
I like this line in her song about her pregnancy,”It’s your house but a stranger’s moved in/Parked in your pull-through/And there’s nothing you can do/Is this body even you?” The song is called “What Is This Body.” Here is a link to it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do1GBf4nIu4 and to the title track “Something More Than Love.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et_YJSDLecY
I have been thinking about these articles and I am going to try something different this month. I am going to challenge you to respond to a couple of my own song prompts. Write a song about seeing and write a song about playing a game. Sports or board games. I like this title “Checkmate.” You might think of something like “I Can See Clearly Now” or “I’m Looking Through You” but both have already been used. I started hunting the internet and here are some more ideas that inspired me. “Use the chord progression from another song, but play it backwards.” I’ve tried variations on this idea. I’ve taken progressions and replaced a chord and changed the original key. Another idea was “Consider life within an absolute dictatorship. Write a song about your commute to work.” I had an immediate idea from this, I even had a picture in my mind.” This next one is more an action than a prompt “Set your alarm slightly earlier than it needs to be, have your notebook and whatever else you may need by your bed, then write a song the very moment you wake up – make this be the absolute first thing you do. Try to spend at least twenty minutes writing the song before you get on with the rest of your day.” You can find these and more ideas at this website:
https://stereostickman.com/100-songwriting-prompts-to-get-you-in-the-zone/ This also happens to be a good musical web site. For more ideas check this YouTube video.

This is called “Top 5 Indie songs that mention Board Games.” Listen to the songs that he mentions. This little video inspired me.
Well that’s what I have this month. Happy writing from the Tower of Song.
